Active Surveillance for Cancer of the Prostate (ASCaP)
The UCLA ASCAP Project is an Observational, Longitudinal, and Open-ended Study Aimed at Establishing a Structured Program of Non-interventional Follow-up for Localized Prostate Cancer.

What to expect
No one can promise a trial will help you personally — that is what the research is trying to find out.
What participation involves
Not stated in the study description — ask the study team about visits and procedures.
- Compensation
- Not stated
- Study-related exams and procedures are typically provided at no cost. This is how many trials work in general — confirm the details for this study with the study team.
- Participants are monitored closely by the research team throughout the study.
- Some participants may receive access to an investigational treatment, which is still being studied.
- Your participation helps researchers learn whether this approach could help future patients.
About this study
In plain language
This study looks at active surveillance for men with low-risk prostate cancer that is limited to the prostate. Active surveillance means regular checks, with treatment aimed at curing the cancer if it gets much worse.
Active Surveillance (A.S.) of prostate cancer (CaP) is the systematic monitoring of men with low-risk, localized lesions, with curative treatment of those whose tumors show substantial progression. A.S. is different from Watchful Waiting (W.W.), which is the palliative treatment of men with progressive prostate cancer.
Compensation is read from the study's own description and may be missing — always confirm with the study team.
Eligibility
Who can join
- A tissue sample confirms prostate adenocarcinoma, a cancer that starts in gland cells.
- The cancer is limited to the prostate. Spread to lymph nodes or other body parts is either not found or not assessed.
- You have not had prostate cancer treatment, including hormone treatment, radiation, surgery, or chemotherapy.
- You have chosen active surveillance as your plan for managing prostate cancer.
- You have agreed to join the study through the local research review board’s consent process.
- You can be reached and can follow the plan for follow-up visits.
Who can't join
- You are unwilling or unable to have repeated prostate biopsies, which remove small tissue samples for testing.
- You are expected to live less than 2 years.
- You have advanced prostate cancer.
Simplified for readability. The official criteria below are what the study team uses.
