What to expect

No one can promise a trial will help you personally — that is what the research is trying to find out.

What participation involves

  • Procedures mentioned: Blood draws

Only what the study's summary and detailed description on ClinicalTrials.gov say. Time periods may describe the whole study or a part of it — ask the study team what applies to you.

Show the study's own words
  • "The investigators will collect a blood sample for the study when the participant has other blood tests drawn for their cancer treatment."
  • "The investigators will take one sample to check prostate specific antigen (PSA) levels and another blood sample for CTC analysis."
Compensation
Not stated
  • Study-related exams and procedures are typically provided at no cost. This is how many trials work in general — confirm the details for this study with the study team.
  • Participants are monitored closely by the research team throughout the study.
  • Some participants may receive access to an investigational treatment, which is still being studied.
  • Your participation helps researchers learn whether this approach could help future patients.

About this study

In plain language

This study tests a way to find cancer cells in the blood without taking a tissue sample (biopsy). It is for men with prostate cancer that has not spread who plan to have surgery to remove the prostate. Researchers will compare the number of cancer cells in the blood before and after surgery.

This study will evaluate a method to detect tumor cells that are circulating in the blood without getting a biopsy. The investigators already know from other studies that cancer tumors shed a small number of cells into the bloodstream every day. These are called circulating tumor cells (CTCs). Some early studies indicate the amount and type of CTCs in the blood can help determine the status of the tumor itself and the way it is responding to treatment. In this study, the investigators will compare the number of CTCs in the blood at different time frames before and after surgery to remove the prostate.

Compensation is read from the study's own description and may be missing — always confirm with the study team.

Eligibility

Who can join

  • Male and age 18 or older.
  • Have prostate adenocarcinoma, a type of prostate cancer, confirmed by testing tissue.
  • Have prostate cancer that has not spread to other parts of the body.
  • Plan to have surgery to remove the whole prostate at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Who can't join

  • Had radiation, hormone treatment, or other medical treatment for prostate cancer before prostate surgery. Treatment after surgery is allowed if your doctor chooses it.
  • Have prostate cancer that has spread to other parts of the body.
  • Have or have had another epithelial cancer (cancer in cells that cover or line organs). Basal cell or squamous cell skin cancers are allowed.

Simplified for readability. The official criteria below are what the study team uses.

Official eligibility criteria

Inclusion Criteria: * Male * 18 years of age or older * Pathologically confirmed diagnosis of prostate adenocarcinoma * Non-metastatic prostate cancer * Planned radical prostatectomy at Massachusetts General Hospital Exclusion Criteria: * Patients must not have received prior radiation therapy, hormone therapy, or other medical therapy for prostate cancer prior to prostatectomy. Post-prostatectomy therapy at the discretion of the patient's treating physician(s) is allowed. * Patients must not have metastatic prostate cancer * No prior or current diagnosis of epithelial malignancy, except for skin cancer (squamous cell carcinoma or basal cell carcinoma)
