What to expect
No one can promise a trial will help you personally — that is what the research is trying to find out.
What participation involves
Not stated in the study description — ask the study team about visits and procedures.
- Compensation
- Not stated
- Study-related exams and procedures are typically provided at no cost. This is how many trials work in general — confirm the details for this study with the study team.
- Participants are monitored closely by the research team throughout the study.
- Some participants may receive access to an investigational treatment, which is still being studied.
- Your participation helps researchers learn whether this approach could help future patients.
About this study
In plain language
This study tests whether PET brain scans using flortaucipir (F 18 T807), a radioactive tracer, show tau protein buildup linked to memory and thinking skills. It is for adults with normal memory and thinking or mild dementia.
A single-center, open-label baseline controlled imaging study designed to assess whether brain tau fibril uptake of flortaucipir as measured by PET correlates with cognitive status of individuals with and without brain tau fibrils.
Compensation is read from the study's own description and may be missing — always confirm with the study team.
Eligibility
Who can join
- Age 18 or older.
- Have normal memory and thinking or mild dementia, based on a clinical exam.
- Be able and willing to have brain scans and a radioactive tracer injection. A CT scan can be used if you cannot have an MRI.
- A lumbar puncture (spinal tap to collect fluid) is listed among the tests, but is described as optional elsewhere in the listing.
- Women who have not gone through menopause must have a urine pregnancy test within 24 hours before the tracer is given.
Who can't join
- Have a condition that the study doctor thinks could make testing unsafe, hard to tolerate, or affect the study results.
- Be unlikely to complete the scans for any reason.
- Have a high risk of a dangerous heart rhythm called Torsades de Pointes, or take medicines that prolong the QT interval, a measure of the heart’s electrical timing.
- Be allergic to F 18 T807 or any of its ingredients.
- Have a reason scans would be unsafe, such as certain electronic medical devices or being unable to lie still for a long time.
- Have a severe fear of small or enclosed spaces.
- Be pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Take any blood thinner if choosing to have the optional spinal tap.
Simplified for readability. The official criteria below are what the study team uses.
Official eligibility criteria
Inclusion Criteria: 1. Male or female participants, at least 18 years of age. 2. Cognitively normal, or with mild dementia, as assessed clinically 3. Participant is able and willing to undergo testing (MRI or CT, PET, radioactive tracer injection, LP; for those unable to undergo an MRI, CT will be used to generate regions-of-interest). 4. Pre-menopausal women will undergo a urine pregnancy test within 24 hours of drug administration. Exclusion Criteria: 1. Has any condition that, in the Investigator's opinion, could increase risk to the participant, limit the participant's ability to tolerate the experimental procedures, or interfere with the collection/analysis of the data (for example, participants with severe chronic back pain might not be able to lie still during the scanning procedures). 2. Is deemed likely unable to perform the imaging procedures for any reason. 3. Has a high risk for Torsades de Pointes or is taking medications known to prolong QT interval. 4. Has hypersensitivity to F 18 T807 or any of its excipients. 5. Contraindications to PET, PET-CT or MR (e.g. electronic medical devices, inability to lie still for long periods) that make it unsafe for the individual to participate. 6. Severe claustrophobia. 7. Currently pregnant or breast-feeding. 8. For those electing to undergo the optional lumbar puncture: currently on anticoagulant of any form -
