What to expect
No one can promise a trial will help you personally — that is what the research is trying to find out.
What participation involves
Not stated in the study description — ask the study team about visits and procedures.
- Compensation
- Not stated
- Study-related exams and procedures are typically provided at no cost. This is how many trials work in general — confirm the details for this study with the study team.
- Participants are monitored closely by the research team throughout the study.
- Some participants may receive access to an investigational treatment, which is still being studied.
- Your participation helps researchers learn whether this approach could help future patients.
About this study
In plain language
This study uses two types of PET brain scans, called PIB and VAT, in people with Parkinson disease. It aims to find who may be at risk for dementia—problems with memory and thinking—and to tell apart its types and causes.
The purpose of this study is to use a brain imaging method called Pittsburgh B (PIB) Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and Vesicular Cholinergic Transport (VAT) PET to determine dementia subtypes in patients with Parkinson disease (PD). The ultimate goal of this project is to be able to identify individuals with PD who are at risk of developing dementia, and to distinguish the underlying cause of dementia.
Compensation is read from the study's own description and may be missing — always confirm with the study team.
Eligibility
Who can join
- You must have Parkinson disease and meet one of these two rules: have at least 3 of these signs—shaking at rest, stiff muscles, slow movement, or trouble with balance; OR have 2 signs, with shaking, stiffness, or slow movement worse on one side of the body.
Who can't join
- A history of head injury.
- A major brain, nerve, or mental health condition other than Parkinson disease or dementia, such as stroke, multiple sclerosis, depression, or schizophrenia.
- A severe illness affecting the body.
- Being unable to lie still for 90 minutes.
- Metal implants, a pacemaker, or another reason you cannot safely have an MRI scan.
- Not agreeing to donate your brain.
Simplified for readability. The official criteria below are what the study team uses.
Official eligibility criteria
Inclusion Criteria: * PD patients must exhibit three of the following cardinal signs: rest tremor, rigidity, bradykinesia, or postural instability; or two of these features with one of the first three displaying asymmetry. Exclusion Criteria: * history of head trauma, major neurological or psychiatric diseases other than Parkinson disease and dementia, e.g. stroke, multiple sclerosis, depression or schizophrenia. * severe systemic diseases. * inability to lie still for 90 minutes. * metallic implants, pacemakers, or any other contraindication to MRI. * refusal to consent to brain donation.
