What to expect
No one can promise a trial will help you personally — that is what the research is trying to find out.
What participation involves
Not stated in the study description — ask the study team about visits and procedures.
- Compensation
- Not stated
- Study-related exams and procedures are typically provided at no cost. This is how many trials work in general — confirm the details for this study with the study team.
- Participants are monitored closely by the research team throughout the study.
- Some participants may receive access to an investigational treatment, which is still being studied.
- Your participation helps researchers learn whether this approach could help future patients.
About this study
In plain language
This study tests whether detailed eye scans and photos can find signs of diseases that affect the brain and nerves. The scans look at the back of the eye and its tiny blood vessels without surgery. The study is for adults with or without these conditions.
This study aims to develop and evaluate biomarkers using non-invasive optical coherence tomography (OCT) and OCT angiography (OCTA) as well as ultra-widefield (UWF) fundus photography to assess the structure and function of the retinal and choroidal microvasculature and structure in persons with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's Disease (AD), Parkinson's Disease (PD), or other neurodegenerative disease, diseases as outlined.
Compensation is read from the study's own description and may be missing — always confirm with the study team.
Eligibility
Who can join
- Adults with mild cognitive impairment (problems with memory or thinking), Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, or other listed brain and nerve conditions.
- Other listed conditions include frontotemporal dementia and Lewy body dementia, which affect thinking and behavior.
- Adults with ALS, multiple sclerosis, or Huntington's disease, which can affect nerves and movement.
- Adults with a brain injury, concussion, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), or Down syndrome.
- Adults without a disease that damages the brain or nerves.
Who can't join
- People who cannot cooperate with or finish the tests.
- People with other nerve conditions or age-related eye conditions that would make it hard to take the eye images.
- Eyes that have had surgery inside the eye, except cataract surgery.
Simplified for readability. The official criteria below are what the study team uses.
Official eligibility criteria
Inclusion Criteria: * Adults with neurodegenerative disease ((MCI, PD, AD, FTD, DLB, ALS, MS, HD, TBI, concussion, PTSD and other neurodegenerations as well as Down Syndrome) * Adults without neurodegenerative disease Exclusion Criteria: * Inability to cooperate with or complete testing or other neurologic or age- related ocular conditions that would impact image acquisition. * Eyes that have had intraocular surgery, other than cataract surgery. If two eyes satisfy the inclusion criteria, both eyes will be included in the study. If one eye satisfies the inclusion criteria, the eye that qualifies will be included in the study.
