About this study
In plain language
The MERIT study collects mammogram images, blood samples, and health information from women having routine breast screening. These may be used in future research on breast cancer, other cancers, and women's health.

Compensation is read from the study's own description and may be missing — always confirm with the study team.
Eligibility
Who can join
- Willing to join the study and able to give informed consent, meaning you understand and agree to take part.
- Willing to fill out a questionnaire and give blood at the first visit and yearly follow-up visits.
- Having a screening mammogram at a study site. Routine yearly diagnostic mammograms (more detailed breast X-rays) also qualify, as do contrast-enhanced mammograms (CEM, which use dye) done as part of a screening study.
Who can't join
- Breastfeeding now or within the past 6 months.
- Have ever had breast cancer, including DCIS (cancer that stays inside the milk ducts) or invasive breast cancer (cancer that has spread into nearby breast tissue).
- Had another cancer treated within the past 5 years. This does not include in-situ or stage 0 cancers (cancers that have not spread beyond where they started), non-melanoma skin cancers, or changes that may become cancer.
Simplified for readability. The official criteria below are what the study team uses.
Official eligibility criteria
Inclusion Criteria: * Willingness to participate in the study and ability to provide informed consent * Willingness to complete a questionnaire and to provide a blood sample at the initial visit and at follow up annual visits * Undergoing a screening mammogram at participating sites. Subjects undergoing routine annual diagnostic mammograms or CEM as part of a screening study are also eligible. Exclusion Criteria: * Current or recent (within the prior 6 months) history of breast feeding * Personal history of breast cancer (ductal breast carcinoma in situ \[DCIS\] or invasive breast cancer) * Personal history of any other cancer (excluding in-situ, stage 0, and non-melanoma skin cancers and other pre-cancerous conditions) treated within the last 5 years.
