What to expect
No one can promise a trial will help you personally — that is what the research is trying to find out.
What participation involves
Not stated in the study description — ask the study team about visits and procedures.
- Compensation
- Not stated
- Study-related exams and procedures are typically provided at no cost. This is how many trials work in general — confirm the details for this study with the study team.
- Participants are monitored closely by the research team throughout the study.
- Some participants may receive access to an investigational treatment, which is still being studied.
- Your participation helps researchers learn whether this approach could help future patients.
About this study
In plain language
This small study looks at whether genes can help predict liver damage from asparaginase, a drug used to treat acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), a blood cancer. It tests saliva samples from people with newly diagnosed ALL to look for gene markers that may show how well they can handle the drug.
This pilot trial studies the impact of genetic information on developing liver damage caused by asparaginase in participants with newly diagnosed acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Testing saliva samples may help doctors find certain genetic markers that may predict whether participants will tolerate asparaginase, which is given as part of clinical care for acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
Compensation is read from the study's own description and may be missing — always confirm with the study team.
Eligibility
Who can join
- You have newly diagnosed ALL and have not had treatment for it before.
- You are receiving asparaginase as part of your first treatment plan.
- You can understand the study and are willing to sign a form agreeing to join.
- If joining based on past treatment, you received asparaginase between 2012 and 2017 and are still a patient at the University of Southern California (USC).
Who can't join
- You cannot give informed consent, meaning you cannot agree to join after understanding the study.
Simplified for readability. The official criteria below are what the study team uses.
Official eligibility criteria
Inclusion Criteria: * Newly diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) - no prior treatment for ALL * Receiving asparaginase as part of the primary treatment regimen * Ability to understand and the willingness to sign a written informed consent * For retrospective recruitment, those who have received asparaginase between 2012 and 2017; and are current patients of University of Southern California (USC) Exclusion Criteria: * Patients who are unable to give informed consent
