What to expect
No one can promise a trial will help you personally — that is what the research is trying to find out.
What participation involves
- Time periods mentioned: 10 years
- Procedures mentioned: Blood draws, Questionnaires
Only what the study's summary and detailed description on ClinicalTrials.gov say. Time periods may describe the whole study or a part of it — ask the study team what applies to you.
Show the study's own words
- "Participation involves a blood draw, a brief medical history questionnaire and measurements of height and weight."
- "Some participants will be asked to return for annual follow-up visits for 10 years."
- "Participants will have height and weight measured, complete a social \& medical history questionnaire, and have blood drawn for analysis for HLA haplotype (a genetic sequence related to type 1 diabetes susceptibility)diabetes, blood glucose, immune system response, complete blood count, and autoantibody measurements."
- "Some family members may return for follow-up visits for up to 10 years."
- Compensation
- Not stated
- Study-related exams and procedures are typically provided at no cost. This is how many trials work in general — confirm the details for this study with the study team.
- Participants are monitored closely by the research team throughout the study.
- Some participants may receive access to an investigational treatment, which is still being studied.
- Your participation helps researchers learn whether this approach could help future patients.
About this study
In plain language
This study looks at how genes, the world around us, and the immune system may lead to type 1 diabetes. It is for families with type 1 diabetes and people without a family history of diseases in which the immune system attacks the body. Taking part includes a blood draw, a short health survey, and height and weight checks; some people will have yearly visits for 10 years.
The purpose of this study is to gain more information about the step-by-step process that causes someone to develop type 1 diabetes. Scientists think that a person's own immune system, directed by genetic and environmental factors play a major role in its development. Participation involves a blood draw, a brief medical history questionnaire and measurements of height and weight. Some participants will be asked to return for annual follow-up visits for 10 years.
Compensation is read from the study's own description and may be missing — always confirm with the study team.
Eligibility
Who can join
- Family group: At least one close family member—a parent, child, brother, or sister—must have type 1 diabetes.
- Family group: The person with type 1 diabetes who is the starting point for studying the family must have been diagnosed before age 39.
- Family group: Family members must be age 2 or older.
- Comparison group: Must have no family history of type 1 diabetes or other autoimmune diseases, in which the immune system attacks the body.
- Comparison group: Must be age 2 or older.
Who can't join
- Family group: Families with no history of type 1 diabetes cannot join.
- Family group: Families with a history of diabetes other than type 1, such as type 2, LADA (slow-developing autoimmune diabetes in adults), or MODY (an inherited form of diabetes), cannot join.
- Comparison group: People with an autoimmune disease, or a family history of one, cannot join.
Simplified for readability. The official criteria below are what the study team uses.
Official eligibility criteria
