What to expect

No one can promise a trial will help you personally — that is what the research is trying to find out.

What participation involves

Not stated in the study description — ask the study team about visits and procedures.

Compensation
Not stated
  • Study-related exams and procedures are typically provided at no cost. This is how many trials work in general — confirm the details for this study with the study team.
  • Participants are monitored closely by the research team throughout the study.
  • Some participants may receive access to an investigational treatment, which is still being studied.
  • Your participation helps researchers learn whether this approach could help future patients.

About this study

In plain language

This study is for adults ages 21–60 with type 2 diabetes. It tests whether exercise, liraglutide, or both improve blood flow in the heart and muscles, blood vessel health, and how well insulin works. Participants are placed into one of three groups by chance and tested before and after 16 weeks of treatment.

The primary objective of this study is to examine whether exercise training alone, liraglutide treatment alone or exercise training plus liraglutide treatment increases cardiac and muscle capillary blood volume, improves vascular function in the larger conduit vessels, and enhances insulin's metabolic action in humans with Type 2 diabetes. Subjects will be randomized to one of the three groups: exercise training, liraglutide treatment, and exercise + liraglutide. They will be studied at the baseline and then after 16 weeks of intervention.

Compensation is read from the study's own description and may be missing — always confirm with the study team.

Eligibility

Who can join

  • Age 21–60.
  • A1C (a measure of average blood sugar) of 8.5% or less.
  • Never used GLP-1RA drugs, such as exenatide or liraglutide, or DPP4I drugs, such as sitagliptin. These are types of diabetes drugs.
  • Taking the same dose of diabetes pills for more than 4 months.
  • Taking the same doses of other medicines for more than 4 months.

Who can't join

  • Taking insulin, or smoking now or within the past 6 months.
  • Blood pressure above 160/90, or BMI above 35. BMI is a measure of weight compared with height.
  • Family history of medullary thyroid cancer or multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome, a condition that causes tumors in hormone-making glands.
  • History of heart failure, reduced blood flow to the heart, severe lung disease, liver disease, or kidney disease.
  • Any blood vessel disease, such as a heart attack, stroke, or poor blood flow in the arms or legs.
  • A shunt in the heart or lungs—an opening or connection that lets blood take an unusual path.
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Known allergy to perflutren, an ingredient in Definity.

Simplified for readability. The official criteria below are what the study team uses.

Official eligibility criteria

Inclusion Criteria: * Age 21-60 * A1C ≤ 8.5% * Never on GLP-1RA (eg: exenatide, liraglutide) or DPP4I ( eg: Sitaglipton) * On stable dose of oral hypoglycemic agents \>4 months * On stable dose of other medications for \>4 months Exclusion Criteria: * Taking Insulin * Smoking presently or in the past 6 months * BP \>160/90 * BMI \>35 * Family history of medullary thyroid cancer or multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome * History of congestive heart failure, ischemic heart disease, severe pulmonary disease, liver or kidney disease. * Any vascular disease such as myocardial infarction, stroke, peripheral vascular disease * Presence of an intracardiac or intrapulmonary shunt (we will screen for this by auscultation during the physical exam by PI). * Pregnant or breastfeeding. * Known hypersensitivity to perflutren (contained in Definity)
