What to expect

No one can promise a trial will help you personally — that is what the research is trying to find out.

What participation involves

Not stated in the study description — ask the study team about visits and procedures.

Compensation
Not stated
  • Study-related exams and procedures are typically provided at no cost. This is how many trials work in general — confirm the details for this study with the study team.
  • Participants are monitored closely by the research team throughout the study.
  • Some participants may receive access to an investigational treatment, which is still being studied.
  • Your participation helps researchers learn whether this approach could help future patients.

About this study

In plain language

This study tests the most effective dose of radiation given over a shorter time before surgery to remove part of the breast and operate on the armpit area. It is for women age 50 or older with selected types of early-stage breast cancer.

The purpose of this study is to find the most effective dose of radiation therapy to give to breast tumors in a shorter period of time, prior to standard partial mastectomy/axillary surgery.

Compensation is read from the study's own description and may be missing — always confirm with the study team.

Eligibility

Who can join

  • You are a woman age 50 or older.
  • A tissue test shows invasive breast cancer, meaning cancer has grown into nearby breast tissue.
  • You have one breast tumor, stage T1N0M0: no larger than 2 centimeters, with no spread to lymph nodes or distant body parts.
  • Your cancer tests positive for estrogen and progesterone receptors and negative for HER2. These are proteins that can affect cancer growth.
  • You have Oncotype or MammaPrint results before treatment starts. These tests look at genes in the cancer.
  • You can have an MRI scan and are fully active or limited only in hard physical activity.
  • If you can become pregnant, you must have a negative pregnancy test and use birth control or avoid sex before joining and during the study. Tell your doctor right away if you think you are pregnant.
  • You can understand the study and its possible risks and benefits, and agree to sign consent and health privacy forms.

Who can't join

  • You do not have tissue-test proof of invasive breast cancer or lack Oncotype or MammaPrint results before treatment.
  • Your cancer has spread to distant parts of the body.
  • Your health limits activity enough that you cannot work, need help caring for yourself, or are more disabled.
  • You cannot have an MRI scan or have had radiation to the chest.
  • You have a history of lupus, scleroderma, or dermatomyositis—diseases that can affect connective tissue, skin, or muscles.
  • You have a serious medical or mental health condition that the study doctor thinks could prevent you from following study or treatment requirements.
  • You were diagnosed with another cancer in the past 5 years, except for non-melanoma skin cancer.
  • You cannot give consent, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or are a prisoner.

Simplified for readability. The official criteria below are what the study team uses.
