What to expect

No one can promise a trial will help you personally — that is what the research is trying to find out.

What participation involves

  • Procedures mentioned: MRI scans

Only what the study's summary and detailed description on ClinicalTrials.gov say. Time periods may describe the whole study or a part of it — ask the study team what applies to you.

Show the study's own words
  • "The purpose of this study is to develop and evaluate the usefulness of hyperpolarized (HP) 129Xe gas MRI for regional assessment of pulmonary function."
  • "In addition to 129Xe MRI, a series of anatomical conventional 1H MR images will be collected including a localizer scan, breath-hold spin echo image, and breath-hold steady-state free precession image to highlight the vasculature."
Compensation
Not stated
  • Study-related exams and procedures are typically provided at no cost. This is how many trials work in general — confirm the details for this study with the study team.
  • Participants are monitored closely by the research team throughout the study.
  • Some participants may receive access to an investigational treatment, which is still being studied.
  • Your participation helps researchers learn whether this approach could help future patients.

About this study

In plain language

This study tests how useful an MRI scan with a special form of xenon gas (129Xe) is for checking how different parts of the lungs work. It is for healthy volunteers and people with lung disease.

The purpose of this study is to develop and evaluate the usefulness of hyperpolarized (HP) 129Xe gas MRI for regional assessment of pulmonary function.

Compensation is read from the study's own description and may be missing — always confirm with the study team.

Eligibility

Who can join

  • Healthy volunteers: Have no diagnosed lung conditions.
  • People with lung disease: Have a lung function problem diagnosed by a doctor.
  • People with lung disease: Have had no sudden worsening of lung function in the past 30 days.
  • Everyone: Can read and understand English or Spanish.

Who can't join

  • Your MRI safety screening shows that you cannot safely have an MRI.
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • You do not fit into the special vest used for the MRI.
  • You cannot hold your breath for 15–16 seconds.
  • The study team thinks you may not be able to follow instructions during the scan.
  • Your blood oxygen level is below 88%, either breathing room air or using extra oxygen.
  • Problems with thinking or understanding keep you from giving consent to join.
  • You live in an institution.

Simplified for readability. The official criteria below are what the study team uses.

Official eligibility criteria

Inclusion Criteria: Healthy Volunteers: * Subject has no diagnosed pulmonary conditions * Ability to read and understand English or Spanish Subjects with Lung Disease: * Subject has a diagnosis of pulmonary dysfunction made by a physician * No acute worsening of pulmonary function in the past 30 days * Ability to read and understand English or Spanish Exclusion Criteria: * MRI is contraindicated based on responses to MRI screening questionnaire * Subject is pregnant or lactating * Subject does not fit into 129Xe vest coil used for MRI * Subject cannot hold his/her breath for 15-16 seconds * Subject deemed unlikely to be able to comply with instructions during imaging * Oxygen saturation \<88% on room air or with supplemental oxygen * Cognitive deficits that preclude ability to provide consent * Institutionalization
