What to expect
No one can promise a trial will help you personally — that is what the research is trying to find out.
What participation involves
Not stated in the study description — ask the study team about visits and procedures.
- Compensation
- Not stated
- Study-related exams and procedures are typically provided at no cost. This is how many trials work in general — confirm the details for this study with the study team.
- Participants are monitored closely by the research team throughout the study.
- Some participants may receive access to an investigational treatment, which is still being studied.
- Your participation helps researchers learn whether this approach could help future patients.
About this study
In plain language
This study looks at brain activity linked to thinking problems and other symptoms not related to movement in Parkinson’s disease. It is for adults age 40 or older with Parkinson’s disease who are scheduled for deep brain stimulation surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Researchers will record brain activity during surgery.
The goal of this study is to learn more about the brain activity underlying Parkinson's disease cognitive impairment. The investigators will utilize neural recordings from corticostriatal structures performed during deep brain stimulation surgery to measure neural activity underlying nonmotor symptoms of Parkinson's disease.
Compensation is read from the study's own description and may be missing — always confirm with the study team.
Eligibility
Who can join
- Scheduled for deep brain stimulation surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center with local anesthesia, which numbs the surgery area.
- The planned path of the electrode, a thin wire used in surgery, must reach a brain area called the caudate.
- Age 40 or older.
- Have Parkinson’s disease.
- Able to take part in testing during surgery.
- Speak English.
Who can't join
- Under age 40.
- Unable to take part in testing during surgery, such as being unable to understand or follow directions.
- Have a movement disorder other than Parkinson’s disease.
Simplified for readability. The official criteria below are what the study team uses.
Official eligibility criteria
Inclusion criteria: * Scheduled to undergo deep brain stimulation surgery under local anesthesia at Vanderbilt University Medical Center * Planned clinical electrode trajectory that contacts caudate * Age greater than or equal to 40 * Diagnosis of Parkinson's disease * Able to participate in intraoperative testing * English speaking Exclusion criteria: * Age less than 40 * Not able to participate in intraoperative testing (for example unable to comprehend instructions or follow directions) * Movement disorder other than Parkinson's disease
