What to expect

No one can promise a trial will help you personally — that is what the research is trying to find out.

What participation involves

  • Procedures mentioned: Ultrasound, Biopsies, MRI scans

Only what the study's summary and detailed description on ClinicalTrials.gov say. Time periods may describe the whole study or a part of it — ask the study team what applies to you.

Show the study's own words
  • "This study evaluates the effectiveness of a breast ultrasound method for the diagnosis of breast cancer."
  • "Diagnostic procedures, such as breast ultrasound, may help find and diagnose breast cancer, and may help measure a patient's response to earlier treatment."
  • "The purpose of this research is to test the effectiveness of a new investigational breast ultrasound method to detect an abnormality in the breast, and assess response to breast cancer treatment."
  • "Determine the diagnostic performance of the proposed method in a population of pre-biopsy patients with suspicious breast masses and correlate the proposed method results with pathology as the gold standard."
  • "Assess and predict the response to preoperative chemotherapy and/or endocrine therapy in breast cancer patients using the proposed method and compare the results to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as control and surgical pathology for pathological complete response (PcR)."
  • "OUTLINE: AIM 1: Participants undergo a breast ultrasound over 15 minutes."
Compensation
Not stated
  • Study-related exams and procedures are typically provided at no cost. This is how many trials work in general — confirm the details for this study with the study team.
  • Participants are monitored closely by the research team throughout the study.
  • Some participants may receive access to an investigational treatment, which is still being studied.
  • Your participation helps researchers learn whether this approach could help future patients.

About this study

In plain language

This study tests a new breast ultrasound method to find breast changes that may be cancer and check how well breast cancer treatment is working. It is for adults with a suspicious breast lump or confirmed breast cancer.

This study evaluates the effectiveness of a breast ultrasound method for the diagnosis of breast cancer. Diagnostic procedures, such as breast ultrasound, may help find and diagnose breast cancer, and may help measure a patient's response to earlier treatment. The purpose of this research is to test the effectiveness of a new investigational breast ultrasound method to detect an abnormality in the breast, and assess response to breast cancer treatment.

Eligibility

Who can join

  • You must be age 18 or older and fit one of the two study groups below.
  • Group 1: You have a suspicious breast lump and are scheduled for a biopsy, or had a biopsy at least 2 weeks ago. A biopsy removes tissue to check for cancer.
  • Group 2: A biopsy has confirmed breast cancer. You are getting chemotherapy and/or hormone treatment before surgery and have had a starting MRI and/or ultrasound scan.

Who can't join

  • You have breast implants.
  • You have a condition that prevents proper use of ultrasound.

Simplified for readability. The official criteria below are what the study team uses.

Official eligibility criteria

Inclusion Criteria: * AIM 1: Patient volunteers, ages \>= 18 with suspicious breast masses scheduled for breast biopsy, or at least two weeks or more after breast biopsy * AIM 2: Patient volunteers, ages \>= 18 who have biopsy proven breast cancer and are going under neoadjuvant chemotherapy and/or endocrine therapy had their baseline MRI and/or ultrasound Exclusion Criteria: * Patients with breast implants or any condition that does not allow proper use of ultrasound (US)
