What to expect

No one can promise a trial will help you personally — that is what the research is trying to find out.

What participation involves

Not stated in the study description — ask the study team about visits and procedures.

Compensation
Not stated
  • Study-related exams and procedures are typically provided at no cost. This is how many trials work in general — confirm the details for this study with the study team.
  • Participants are monitored closely by the research team throughout the study.
  • Some participants may receive access to an investigational treatment, which is still being studied.
  • Your participation helps researchers learn whether this approach could help future patients.

About this study

In plain language

This study tests whether fluid used to rinse the airways during routine lung cancer surgery has enough tiny sacs, called vesicles, for testing. These tests may help researchers learn more about non-small cell lung cancer. The study is for adults being considered for surgery to remove cancer that started in the lungs.

The purpose of this study is to find out if fluid rinsed from peoples' airways (bronchial washing samples) during routine surgery to remove (resect) their non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) tumors contains enough vesicles to do testing that may help the researchers learn more about their NSCLC.

Compensation is read from the study's own description and may be missing — always confirm with the study team.

Eligibility

Who can join

  • You are age 18 or older.
  • You are being considered for surgery to remove part or all of a lung for cancer that started in the lungs.
  • If you have had cancer removed by surgery or had radiation treatment before, the study team will review whether you can join.

Who can't join

  • You have an active infection or pneumonia that may change the makeup of the tiny sacs being studied.
  • Your surgeon thinks collecting fluid from your airways would put your health at too much risk.

Simplified for readability. The official criteria below are what the study team uses.

Official eligibility criteria

Inclusion Criteria: * All patients ≥ 18 years of age undergoing consideration of surgical resection, including lobar resections, sublobar resections, and pneumonectomies, for primary lung cancer will be eligible. * Patients with previously resected disease and/or previous radiation therapy will be considered on a case by case basis. Exclusion Criteria: * Patients with active infection or pneumonia which may impact exosome makeup * Additionally, if at the discretion of the operating surgeon, obtaining bronchial washings would lead to undue morbidity, the patient would be excluded and replaced
