What to expect
No one can promise a trial will help you personally — that is what the research is trying to find out.
What participation involves
Not stated in the study description — ask the study team about visits and procedures.
- Compensation
- Not stated
- Study-related exams and procedures are typically provided at no cost. This is how many trials work in general — confirm the details for this study with the study team.
- Participants are monitored closely by the research team throughout the study.
- Some participants may receive access to an investigational treatment, which is still being studied.
- Your participation helps researchers learn whether this approach could help future patients.
About this study
In plain language
This study looks at how brain areas connect during rest and movement, and how these connections relate to movement and thinking. The findings may help improve deep brain stimulation (DBS) in the future. It is for adults age 21 or older with Parkinson’s disease who already have a DBS device and certain brain images.
By defining the strength and direction of connectivity patterns at rest and during movement across the basal ganglia-thalamocortical (BGTC) network we will characterize the role of individual circuits in motor performance and cognitive function, paving the way for future development of optimization algorithms for DBS that take advantage of this understanding.
Compensation is read from the study's own description and may be missing — always confirm with the study team.
Eligibility
Who can join
- Have an implanted deep brain stimulation (DBS) device, which sends electrical signals to the brain.
- Already have 7T brain images, a type of detailed brain scan, from routine care or Noam Harel’s study (IRB #1210M22183).
- Have idiopathic Parkinson’s disease, meaning the cause is not known.
- Are age 21 or older.
Who can't join
- Have another major brain or nerve disorder, as judged by the lead researcher.
- Have dementia, a condition that affects memory and thinking.
- Are pregnant.
Simplified for readability. The official criteria below are what the study team uses.
Official eligibility criteria
Inclusion Criteria: * Implanted with a DBS system * Existing 7T imagery (either done as standard-of-care or done as part of Noam Harel's study, IRB #1210M22183) * Diagnosed with idiopathic Parkinson's Disease * Minimum age 21 years Exclusion Criteria: * Other significant neurological disorder, as determined by PI * Diagnosis of dementia * Pregnant
