What to expect

No one can promise a trial will help you personally — that is what the research is trying to find out.

What participation involves

Not stated in the study description — ask the study team about visits and procedures.

Compensation
Mentioned in the study description
  • Study-related exams and procedures are typically provided at no cost. This is how many trials work in general — confirm the details for this study with the study team.
  • Participants are monitored closely by the research team throughout the study.
  • Some participants may receive access to an investigational treatment, which is still being studied.
  • Your participation helps researchers learn whether this approach could help future patients.

About this study

In plain language

This study tests how safe CELZ-201 is and how well it works when given into an artery, a blood vessel. It is for adults ages 18–35 who were diagnosed with type 1 diabetes within the past year.

The brief purpose of this research study is to learn about the safety and efficacy of intra-arterial administration of CELZ-201 in patients with newly diagnosed Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1D).

Compensation is read from the study's own description and may be missing — always confirm with the study team.

Eligibility

Who can join

  • Be 18–35 years old and able to understand and sign a form agreeing to join.
  • Have type 1 diabetes diagnosed within the past year and confirmed by standard tests.
  • Test positive for at least two of these markers of an immune attack on insulin-making cells: GAD65, IA-2, or ZnT8.
  • Have a peak C-peptide level above 0.6 ng/mL during a 4-hour meal test. This checks how much insulin your body makes.
  • Be mentally stable, able to follow study steps, and willing to follow usual diabetes care.
  • Have a kidney filtering test result, called eGFR, above 80.
  • If able to have children, agree to use two FDA-approved birth control methods throughout the 2-year study. Women who could become pregnant must have a negative pregnancy test.
  • Have veins that allow the blood draws needed for the study.

Who can't join

  • Have a body mass index (BMI) above 28, an A1C blood sugar level above 9%, or blood pressure above 140 for the top number or 90 for the bottom number.
  • Have heart disease, certain liver or blood-clotting problems, uncontrolled thyroid disease, or blood counts, liver tests, or blood fats outside the study limits. Long-term blood thinners other than low-dose aspirin also rule you out.
  • Have gallstones causing symptoms, an inflamed pancreas, an ulcer causing symptoms, slow stomach emptying, another severe digestive illness, or an eating disorder.
  • Have an active infection, including COVID-19, or test results showing a serious ongoing infection such as hepatitis B or C, tuberculosis, or HIV. A live, weakened vaccine within 6 weeks before study group assignment also rules you out.
  • Use or expect to use diabetes drugs other than insulin, or recently use other drugs that affect blood sugar. Current or recent drugs that suppress or change the immune system or kill cells also rule you out.
  • Have joined a past treatment study, have an organ or tissue transplant from another person, or have a history of cancer other than localized basal or squamous cell skin cancer. Drug or alcohol abuse also rules you out.
  • Be pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning pregnancy during the study, or have a female partner planning pregnancy with you. Be unable or unwilling to meet birth control rules.
  • Have a serious allergy to CELZ-201 or its ingredients, any past reaction to heparin, or an allergy to iodine contrast dye or anesthesia. You also cannot join if you cannot complete study tasks or the study doctor thinks joining would be unsafe or unsuitable.

Simplified for readability. The official criteria below are what the study team uses.

Official eligibility criteria

Inclusion Criteria: 1. Subject must be able to understand and provide signed informed consent. 2. Males and females, 18-35 years of age. 3. Diagnosis of T1D within 1 year, with stimulated C-peptide peak level \>0.6 ng/mL as assessed by 4-hour MMTT at the time of Visit 0 (screening). 4. Diagnosed with T1D, according to ADA standard criteria, and confirmed by positivity to at least two islet autoantibodies, GAD65, IA-2, or ZnT8. 5. Mentally stable and able to comply with the procedures of the study protocol 6. Subjects must be willing to comply with "standard-of-care" diabetes management. 7. Subjects with eGFR \>80 ml/min/1.73m2 8. Female subjects of childbearing potential must have a negative pregnancy test upon study entry. 9. Female (and male) subjects with reproductive potential must agree to use two FDA approved methods of birth control for the entire duration of the study. Potential subjects of childbearing potential should agree to use effective contraception for the entire 2-year period. 10. Adequate venous access to support study required blood draws. Exclusion Criteria: 1. Inability or unwillingness of a subject to give written informed consent or comply with study protocol. 2. BMI\>28 kg/m. 3. HbA1c \> 9% 4. Subjects with poorly controlled hypertension as defined by systolic blood pressure \>140 mmHg or diastolic blood pressure \>90 mmHg. 5. Subjects with any history of cardiac disease, including but not limited to myocardial infarction, uncompensated heart failure, fluid overload, as well as any clinically significant abnormality identified on prior cardiac stress test, angiogram evaluation, or echocardiogram. 6. Subjects with liver disease, portal hypertension, any coagulopathy (including history of Factor V deficiency) or long-term anti-coagulant therapy (except low-dose aspirin). Other hepatic conditions including hepatic anatomic abnormalities or variants that would place the individual at increased risk in the judgment of the investigator are also considered exclusionary. 7. Symptomatic cholecystolithiasis; acute or chronic pancreatitis; or current symptomatic peptic ulcer disease. 8. Subjects with uncontrolled thyroid disease: thyroid stimulating hormone \<0.3 mU/L or \>5 mU/L; free T4 \<5.0 ug/dL or \>11.0 ug/dL. 9. Any of the following laboratory findings: hemoglobin \<11.5 g/dL (females) or \<13.2 g/dL (males); leukocytes \<3,000/μL; neutrophils \<1,500/μL; lymphocytes \<800/μL; platelets \<100,000/μL; elevation in AST and ALT \>2 x ULN (upper limit of normal); LDL cholesterol \>160; Triglycerides \>3 x ULN; total bilirubin \>1.5 x ULN. 10.
