What to expect

No one can promise a trial will help you personally — that is what the research is trying to find out.

What participation involves

Not stated in the study description — ask the study team about visits and procedures.

Compensation
Not stated
  • Study-related exams and procedures are typically provided at no cost. This is how many trials work in general — confirm the details for this study with the study team.
  • Participants are monitored closely by the research team throughout the study.
  • Some participants may receive access to an investigational treatment, which is still being studied.
  • Your participation helps researchers learn whether this approach could help future patients.

About this study

In plain language

This study compares exercise therapy with usual care to see how exercise affects signs of prostate cancer in scans, tissue, and cells. It is for men whose cancer is only in the prostate and who are being closely watched rather than treated right away.

To determine the effects of exercise therapy on molecular, radiologic, and pathologic nimbosus hallmarks versus usual care control in men on Active Surveillance for localized prostate cancer.

Compensation is read from the study's own description and may be missing — always confirm with the study team.

Eligibility

Who can join

  • Men age 18 or older.
  • Have prostate cancer confirmed by a tissue test, with cancer only in the prostate.
  • Are on active surveillance, meaning the cancer is closely watched rather than treated right away.
  • Do less than 150 minutes of moderate or hard exercise each week, checked with a smart watch for 7 days before joining.
  • Get approval from an MSK exercise specialist after screening, including review of an ECG (a test of the heart’s electrical activity).
  • Have a body mass index (BMI), a measure of weight compared with height, below 40.
  • Are cleared to exercise through the Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire (PAR-Q+).

Who can't join

  • Are in another program, such as a weight-loss program, that may change how exercise affects the cancer.
  • Had prostate cancer treatment meant to come before the main treatment within the last 5 years.
  • Had cancer treatment that travels through the body within the last 15 years.
  • Have any cancer that has spread to distant parts of the body.
  • Have another health condition or illness that the study doctor thinks makes the study a poor fit.

Simplified for readability. The official criteria below are what the study team uses.

Official eligibility criteria

Inclusion Criteria: * Age ≥ 18 * Men with histologically confirmed localized prostate cancer undergoing active surveillance. * Inactive, defined as not meeting the national exercise guidelines for cancer patients (\<150 minutes/week of moderate or vigorous exercise)43 as assessed by remote activity and heart rate tracking for a 7-day period prior to study entry (general physical activity screening assessment via smart watch). * Screening clearance by an MSK Exercise Physiologist (i.e., review of ECG) * BMI \<40 kg/m\^2 * Cleared for exercise participation as per pre-screening clearance via the Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire (PAR-Q+) (Appendix B) Exclusion Criteria: * Enrollment in any other program that may alter the impact of exercise on tumor outcomes (e.g., weight loss program) * Any neoadjuvant anticancer treatment of any kind for prostate cancer in the last 5 years * Any history of systemic anticancer therapy in the last 15 years * Distant metastatic malignancy of any kind * Any other condition or intercurrent illness that, in the opinion of the investigator, makes the subject a poor candidate for study participation
