What to expect

No one can promise a trial will help you personally — that is what the research is trying to find out.

What participation involves

  • Time periods mentioned: 12 weeks

Only what the study's summary and detailed description on ClinicalTrials.gov say. Time periods may describe the whole study or a part of it — ask the study team what applies to you.

  • "GROUP I: patients receive lower resistance RMT using a respiratory muscle training device for 12 weeks."
  • "GROUP II: Patients undergo higher resistance RMT using a respiratory muscle training device for 12 weeks on study."
Compensation
Not stated
  • Study-related exams and procedures are typically provided at no cost. This is how many trials work in general — confirm the details for this study with the study team.
  • Participants are monitored closely by the research team throughout the study.
  • Some participants may receive access to an investigational treatment, which is still being studied.
  • Your participation helps researchers learn whether this approach could help future patients.

About this study

In plain language

This study tests whether breathing muscle exercises done at home can reduce side effects during cancer treatment. It is for adults age 21 or older with a solid tumor who will receive cancer treatment at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center.

This clinical trial evaluates whether home-based respiratory muscle training is useful for minimizing side effects in patients undergoing treatment for cancer. Over-activation of the nervous system during breast cancer treatment can result in heart- and lung-related side effects which have the potential to reduce a patient's quality of life. Aerobic exercise can help prevent the development of these side effects. However, engaging in regular aerobic exercise may be difficult for breast cancer patients who are actively undergoing treatment. Respiratory muscle training (RMT) involves a series of breathing and other exercises that are performed to improve the function of the respiratory muscles through resistance and endurance training. Home-based RMT may represent a more feasible approach for reducing side effects in patients undergoing treatment for breast cancer.

Compensation is read from the study's own description and may be missing — always confirm with the study team.

Eligibility

Who can join

  • Able and willing to sign a form agreeing to join the study.
  • Age 21 or older.
  • Have a solid tumor, such as head and neck, chest, or breast cancer.
  • Scheduled for at least one dose of chemotherapy, immunotherapy, or radiation treatment.
  • Receive care at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Who can't join

  • Have disease of the mouth lining at the start of the study, such as swelling, sores, or a yeast infection.
  • Have an illness that is not under control, such as an active breathing infection, heart failure, unstable chest pain, or an abnormal heartbeat.
  • Have a mental health condition or life situation that would make it hard to follow study requirements.
  • Have any condition that the study doctor believes makes the study treatment unsuitable for you.

Simplified for readability. The official criteria below are what the study team uses.

Official eligibility criteria

Inclusion Criteria: * Able and willing to provide written informed consent * Age \>= 21 years old * Diagnosed with solid tumor (e.g., head and neck, thoracic, or breast cancer) * Scheduled to receive at least one dose of chemotherapy or immunotherapy or radiation * Treated at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center Exclusion Criteria: * Presence of oral mucosal disease including oral mucositis, or oral candidiasis detected at baseline * Have uncontrolled intercurrent illness including, but not limited to, ongoing or active respiratory infection, symptomatic congestive heart failure, unstable angina pectoris, cardiac arrhythmia, heart failure or psychiatric illness/social situations that would limit compliance with study requirements * Any condition which in the Investigator's opinion deems the participant an unsuitable candidate to receive study intervention
