What to expect
No one can promise a trial will help you personally — that is what the research is trying to find out.
What participation involves
- Time periods mentioned: 17 months
Only what the study's summary and detailed description on ClinicalTrials.gov say. Time periods may describe the whole study or a part of it — ask the study team what applies to you.
Show the study's own words
- "Participants with a diagnosis of PPA and their actively-engaged care partners will be involved in the study for approximately 17 months."
- Compensation
- Not stated
- Study-related exams and procedures are typically provided at no cost. This is how many trials work in general — confirm the details for this study with the study team.
- Participants are monitored closely by the research team throughout the study.
- Some participants may receive access to an investigational treatment, which is still being studied.
- Your participation helps researchers learn whether this approach could help future patients.
About this study
In plain language
This study compares two speech and language treatments for adults with mild to moderate primary progressive aphasia (PPA), a condition that makes using language harder over time. It looks at how these treatments affect communication. People with PPA join with a communication partner.
This study will use a randomized controlled trial design to evaluate the effect of two evidence-based treatments for adults with mild-moderate Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA). The aim of the study is to help us better understand the effects of speech-language therapy on communication abilities in individuals with PPA.
Compensation is read from the study's own description and may be missing — always confirm with the study team.
Eligibility
Who can join
- The person with PPA must have a diagnosis supported by a neurologist and medical records.
- The person’s PPA must be mild to moderate, based on an interview with a speech and language therapist and tests.
- Both people must use English as their main language for daily communication.
- Both people must hear well enough to talk with others in a crowded room, with or without hearing aids.
- The person with PPA must see well enough to read a newspaper or other everyday materials, with or without vision aids.
- Both people must pass a technology check and be able to use video calls and the Communication Bridge website tool. Training is allowed.
- The person with PPA must score 9 or lower on the Geriatric Depression Scale, a questionnaire about depression.
- The communication partner must be at least 18 years old.
Who can't join
- The person with PPA has a dementia diagnosis other than PPA.
- The person with PPA takes part in another speech and language therapy program during the study.
- The communication partner has an existing condition that affects communication and would limit study participation, such as language loss or dementia.
Simplified for readability. The official criteria below are what the study team uses.
