What to expect
No one can promise a trial will help you personally — that is what the research is trying to find out.
What participation involves
- Time periods mentioned: 8 weeks, 5 days
- Procedures mentioned: Pills
Only what the study's summary and detailed description on ClinicalTrials.gov say. Time periods may describe the whole study or a part of it — ask the study team what applies to you.
Show the study's own words
- "Participants randomly assigned to the rapamycin and placebo groups will take 1 mg of rapamycin or a matched placebo pill daily for approximately 8 weeks."
- "Participants assigned to the FMD arm will adhere to the diet for 5 days over three cycles for a period of 8 weeks."
- "Participants randomized to the rapamycin group will receive 1 mg rapamycin daily for 8 weeks and those in the placebo arm will take one matched placebo pill daily for 8 weeks."
- Compensation
- Not stated
- Study-related exams and procedures are typically provided at no cost. This is how many trials work in general — confirm the details for this study with the study team.
- Participants are monitored closely by the research team throughout the study.
- Some participants may receive access to an investigational treatment, which is still being studied.
- Your participation helps researchers learn whether this approach could help future patients.
About this study
In plain language
This study tests a diet that mimics fasting and a low daily dose of rapamycin against a placebo pill with no active drug. It checks safety, how well people can follow treatment, and early signs of benefit over about 8 weeks. It is for adults ages 45–65 who carry the APOE e4 gene variant, which raises the risk of Alzheimer's disease.
The study aims to evaluate the safety, feasibility, and preliminary efficacy of the fasting-mimicking diet (FMD) or low-dose daily rapamycin treatment relative to a matched placebo control group when administered over 8 weeks in middle-aged adults at elevated risk for Alzheimer's disease due to the apolipoprotein (APOE) ε4 allele. Participants randomly assigned to the FMD intervention will adhere to FMD for 5-days over three cycles for a period of approximately 8 weeks. Participants randomly assigned to the rapamycin and placebo groups will take 1 mg of rapamycin or a matched placebo pill daily for approximately 8 weeks.
Compensation is read from the study's own description and may be missing — always confirm with the study team.
