What to expect

No one can promise a trial will help you personally — that is what the research is trying to find out.

What participation involves

Not stated in the study description — ask the study team about visits and procedures.

Compensation
Not stated
  • Study-related exams and procedures are typically provided at no cost. This is how many trials work in general — confirm the details for this study with the study team.
  • Participants are monitored closely by the research team throughout the study.
  • Some participants may receive access to an investigational treatment, which is still being studied.
  • Your participation helps researchers learn whether this approach could help future patients.

About this study

In plain language

This study compares three ways to use remote interpreters during cancer visits: interpreting as people speak, interpreting after they pause, and interpreting after they pause by video. It is for adults who prefer Spanish or Mandarin and have trouble speaking English. The study description focuses on stage II or III breast cancer, but the entry rules also allow gastrointestinal cancer (cancer in the digestive system).

The study will be conducted in 2 overlapping phases. In Phase 1, there will be a 3-arm randomized controlled trial of Remote Simultaneous Medical Interpreting/RSMI (Arm 1), versus Remote Consecutive Medical Interpreting/RCMI (Arm 2) and versus Remote Consecutive Video Medical Interpreting/RCVI (Arm 3) in breast cancer outpatient clinical encounters with Spanish- and Mandarin-speaking patients with Limited English Proficiency/LEP (Stages II and III disease) and English- speaking providers (who do not speak Spanish/Mandarin). In Phase 2, there will be a sequential mixed-methods explanatory, multi-stakeholder process evaluation to gather implementation potential data.

Compensation is read from the study's own description and may be missing — always confirm with the study team.
