What to expect
No one can promise a trial will help you personally — that is what the research is trying to find out.
What participation involves
- Procedures mentioned: Questionnaires, Interviews
Only what the study's summary and detailed description on ClinicalTrials.gov say. Time periods may describe the whole study or a part of it — ask the study team what applies to you.
Show the study's own words
- "Enrolled participants will first complete a series of questionnaires that will be used as covariates in the analysis at the Rehab Center then proceed with their first rehab session."
- "After completing a session, interviews and questionnaires will be used to assess comfort, fatigue, and exercise intensity."
- Compensation
- Not stated
- Study-related exams and procedures are typically provided at no cost. This is how many trials work in general — confirm the details for this study with the study team.
- Participants are monitored closely by the research team throughout the study.
- Some participants may receive access to an investigational treatment, which is still being studied.
- Your participation helps researchers learn whether this approach could help future patients.
About this study
In plain language
This study is for veterans with COPD, a long-term lung disease that makes breathing hard. It tests whether walking uphill during an exercise program helps people feel less short of breath than walking faster on a flat surface.
This study is designed to provide information regarding how to improve pulmonary rehabilitation for persons with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Pulmonary rehabilitation is an exercise program for COPD patients that is recommended and benefits some, but not all, patients. The question being studied in this trial is whether during an exercise program, walking on an incline might be better than walking on faster on a flat surface in training muscles so that patients might be less short of breath with exercise.
Compensation is read from the study's own description and may be missing — always confirm with the study team.
Eligibility
Who can join
- Veterans of any sex, gender, race, or ethnicity may join.
- Your health must be stable.
- You must take a breathing test after using medicine that opens your airways.
- Your breathing test must show an FEV1/FVC ratio below 0.7 and an FEV1 of 30% to 80% of the expected value. These numbers measure how much air you can breathe out.
- Your BMI, a measure of weight compared with height, must be below 35.
- You must not have other health problems that could affect how you walk, such as poor blood flow in your legs, diabetes, or low back pain.
Who can't join
- You have a nerve, muscle, bone, or metabolism problem that could affect the study results. Metabolism is how your body uses energy.
- You take medicines that change your mood or how much energy your body needs.
- A doctor does not clear you to join after an exercise test that checks your heart and lungs.
- You need an oxygen mask while resting or being active.
Simplified for readability. The official criteria below are what the study team uses.
Official eligibility criteria
Inclusion Criteria: * Veterans from all sex/gender, race, and ethnicity will be recruited * All subjects will undergo post-bronchodilator spirometry and be clinically stable * All subjects must have documented FEV1/FVC ratio of \<0.7, and between 30% to 80% FEV1% predicted * If subjects have non-qualifying spirometry, they will not be screened further * Subjects with qualifying spirometry will be screened further * Potential subjects must have a BMI of less than 35 kg/m2 and must be free from co-morbidities that may affect walking patterns * e.g., peripheral arterial disease, diabetes, low back pain Exclusion Criteria: * Confounding effects such as neurological, musculoskeletal, or metabolic disease * Subjects taking medications that alter mood or metabolic demand will be excluded * All potential subjects must be cleared for participation by a physician after undergoing a cardiopulmonary exercise test * Require an O2 mask during rest or activity
