What to expect
No one can promise a trial will help you personally — that is what the research is trying to find out.
What participation involves
Not stated in the study description — ask the study team about visits and procedures.
- Compensation
- Not stated
- Study-related exams and procedures are typically provided at no cost. This is how many trials work in general — confirm the details for this study with the study team.
- Participants are monitored closely by the research team throughout the study.
- Some participants may receive access to an investigational treatment, which is still being studied.
- Your participation helps researchers learn whether this approach could help future patients.
About this study
In plain language
This study tests whether an artificial intelligence (AI) tool called Sybil can help predict lung cancer risk. It also looks at whether broader screening rules can find more people at risk. It is for adults ages 50–80 with a smoking history who get or plan to get lung screening at UI Health.
This research study aims to investigate methods for enhancing lung cancer screening. The study will investigate whether an artificial intelligence (AI) tool, known as Sybil, can aid in predicting the risk of lung cancer. The investigators will also examine whether expanding the screening criteria (based on the guidelines of the Potter and American Cancer Society (ACS)) can help identify individuals at risk who are not currently included in the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) guidelines.
Compensation is read from the study's own description and may be missing — always confirm with the study team.
Eligibility
Who can join
- Be 50–80 years old when you agree to join.
- Meet at least one smoking rule: smoked for 20 years at any amount; or have at least 20 pack-years, no matter when you quit. One pack-year means smoking one pack a day for one year.
- Be getting or scheduled for a low-dose CT scan (LDCT) through the UI Health Lung Screening Program. This scan uses low-dose X-rays to take pictures of your lungs.
- Be willing to watch a short, about 2-minute video about Sybil AI and lung screening and complete a survey if selected. Giving blood samples is optional.
- Be able to sign forms agreeing to join and allowing your personal health information to be shared.
- If you could become pregnant, you must not be pregnant or breastfeeding. A negative blood or urine pregnancy test is required under the center’s rules.
- Be able to understand and follow study steps for the whole study, as judged by the study doctor or their chosen staff member.
Who can't join
- Cannot have a low-dose CT scan.
- Have lung cancer now or had it less than 5 years before joining.
- Are expected to live less than 1 year.
- Have an active lung infection that needs medicine that works throughout the body.
- Are in a vulnerable group listed by the study, including prisoners and people who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Have another major health problem, as judged by the lead study doctor.
- Have a mental or physical health condition that keeps you from agreeing to join or taking part.
Simplified for readability. The official criteria below are what the study team uses.
Official eligibility criteria
Inclusion Criteria: * Age 50-80 years at the time of consent * Meets at least one of the following LCS eligibility criteria: * USPSTF: ≥20 pack-years, currently smoke or quit ≤15 years ago. * Potter: 20 years of smoking, regardless of intensity * ACS: ≥20 pack-years, no restriction on quit time * Receiving or scheduled for LDCT through the UI Health Lung Screening Program. * Willing to view a short (approximately 2-minute) educational video that explains Sybil AI scoring and LCS, complete the Sybil AI survey (if selected), and/or provide blood samples (optional). * Able to provide written informed consent and HIPAA authorization for release of personal health information, via an approved UIC IRB ICF and HIPAA authorization. * Women of childbearing potential must not be pregnant or breastfeeding. A negative serum or urine pregnancy test is required per institutional practice guidelines. * As determined at the discretion of the enrolling physician or protocol designee, the ability of the subject to understand and comply with study procedures for the entire length of the study Exclusion Criteria: * Inability to undergo LDCT * Current diagnosis or history of lung cancer \< 5 years prior to study enrollment. * Life expectancy \<1 year * Active lung infection requiring systemic therapy * Vulnerable population, including prisoners and pregnant or nursing women, will not be enrolled due to radiation exposure from LDCT, which is contraindicated in pregnancy. * Other major comorbidity, as determined by the study PI * Any mental or medical condition that prevents the patient from giving informed consent or participating in the trial.
