What to expect
No one can promise a trial will help you personally — that is what the research is trying to find out.
What participation involves
- Procedures mentioned: Questionnaires
Only what the study's summary and detailed description on ClinicalTrials.gov say. Time periods may describe the whole study or a part of it — ask the study team what applies to you.
Show the study's own words
- "The research study procedures include screening for eligibility including evaluations of fitness and physical health, surveys, and study entry visits."
- Compensation
- Not stated
- Study-related exams and procedures are typically provided at no cost. This is how many trials work in general — confirm the details for this study with the study team.
- Participants are monitored closely by the research team throughout the study.
- Some participants may receive access to an investigational treatment, which is still being studied.
- Your participation helps researchers learn whether this approach could help future patients.
About this study
In plain language
This pilot study tests whether the Precise Exercise Regimen for Cancer Care (PERCC) exercise program is practical to carry out. It is for adults with stage II or III non-small cell lung cancer who have not started treatment and plan to have treatment followed by surgery.
The purpose of this study is to test the feasibility of the Precise Exercise Regimen for Cancer Care (PERCC) exercise program in participants with stage II-III primary lung cancer.
Compensation is read from the study's own description and may be missing — always confirm with the study team.
Eligibility
Who can join
- Were at least 18 years old when diagnosed.
- Have stage II or III non-small cell lung cancer confirmed by a tissue test, and have not started lung cancer treatment.
- Plan to have chemotherapy alone, with immune-based treatment, or with radiation, followed by surgery.
- Join the study at least 3 weeks before the first treatment given before surgery.
- Can follow directions and fill out forms in English and/or Spanish.
- Can understand and agree to sign a consent form before any study procedures.
- Are willing to travel to DFCI for study data collection.
Who can't join
- Have a body mass index (BMI), a measure of weight compared with height, above 40 or below 17.
- Have unstable or unmanaged health problems that make exercise unsafe. A treating doctor must approve participation.
- Have alcohol or drug abuse, or major mental or emotional problems, that would make it hard to follow study steps.
- Plan to receive only one type of cancer treatment, have surgery within 2 weeks of the pre-treatment clinic visit, or have already started treatment.
- Are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during the study.
- The study doctor thinks you may not be able to follow the study's safety check requirements.
Simplified for readability. The official criteria below are what the study team uses.
Official eligibility criteria
Inclusion Criteria: * Age ≥18 years at time of diagnosis; due to the rarity of the disease in those \<18 years, this age bracket will not be included. * Histologically diagnosed with stage II or III non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and has not started lung cancer treatment. * Patient's treatment plan is to receive neoadjuvant therapy (defined as chemotherapy, chemotherapy and immunotherapy, or chemotherapy and radiation therapy) followed by surgical treatment. Patients will be enrolled at least three weeks prior to receiving their first neoadjuvant treatment. * Ability to follow directions and complete questionnaires in English and/or Spanish. * Ability to understand and the willingness to sign a written informed consent document prior to any study-related procedures. * Willing to travel to DFCI for necessary data collection. Exclusion Criteria: * Patients who are morbidly obese (BMI\>40 kg/m2) or Anorexic (BMI\<17 kg/m2). * Unstable comorbidities that contraindicate participation in exercise program compliance. Patients with unstable comorbidities may develop unexpected adverse events from exercise. For the purpose of patients' safety, as well as because part of this study involves remote, home-based exercise where close supervision is not possible, patients with unstable medical conditions are excluded. Study staff will identify untreated or unmanaged conditions when screening and treating MDs must provide clearance prior to patient enrollment. * Patients with alcohol or drug abuse, significant mental or emotional problems that would interfere with compliance (assessed by NCCN Distress Thermometer). * Patients scheduled to receive single modality cancer treatment (unimodal therapy), scheduled surgery within 2 weeks of the pre-treatment clinic visit, or for whom treatment has already started. * Patients who are pregnant, or plan to become pregnant during study duration will be excluded due to the unknown nature of exercise on developing fetuses. * Subjects who in the opinion of the investigator may not be able to comply with the safety monitoring requirements of the study.
