What to expect

No one can promise a trial will help you personally — that is what the research is trying to find out.

What participation involves

Not stated in the study description — ask the study team about visits and procedures.

Compensation
Not stated
  • Study-related exams and procedures are typically provided at no cost. This is how many trials work in general — confirm the details for this study with the study team.
  • Participants are monitored closely by the research team throughout the study.
  • Some participants may receive access to an investigational treatment, which is still being studied.
  • Your participation helps researchers learn whether this approach could help future patients.

About this study

In plain language

This study tests a microscope method called nonlinear microscopy (NLM) during prostate removal surgery that aims to spare nerves. It checks the edges of removed tissue for cancer in people with prostate cancer.

This study will evaluate the use of intraoperative nonlinear microscopy (NLM) for surgical margin assessment during nerve-sparing radical prostatectomy in participants with prostate cancer.

Compensation is read from the study's own description and may be missing — always confirm with the study team.

Eligibility

Who can join

  • Age 18 or older.
  • Male or assigned male at birth.
  • First diagnosis of prostate cancer that has not spread beyond the prostate.
  • Having surgery to remove the prostate at BIDMC as part of regular care.

Who can't join

  • A short consent form is not available in your language.
  • The study doctor believes you cannot understand enough to give consent.
  • Your latest MRI scan clearly shows cancer growing outside the prostate on both sides.
  • Your prostate is larger than 80 cubic centimeters (cc).

Simplified for readability. The official criteria below are what the study team uses.

Official eligibility criteria

Inclusion Criteria: * Age ≥ 18 years old. * Male or assigned male at birth (AMAB). * Initial diagnosis of localized PrCa. * Undergoing radical prostatectomy at BIDMC as part of their standard of care. Exclusion Criteria: * No short-form available in the participant's language. * Cognitively unable to provide consent, in the opinion of the investigator. * Patients with evidence of unequivocal radiologic bilateral extraprostatic extension (EPE) on most recent MRI results. * Patients with \>80 cc prostate volume (larger prostates would require potentially excessive evaluation time).
