What to expect
No one can promise a trial will help you personally — that is what the research is trying to find out.
What participation involves
Not stated in the study description — ask the study team about visits and procedures.
- Compensation
- Not stated
- Study-related exams and procedures are typically provided at no cost. This is how many trials work in general — confirm the details for this study with the study team.
- Participants are monitored closely by the research team throughout the study.
- Some participants may receive access to an investigational treatment, which is still being studied.
- Your participation helps researchers learn whether this approach could help future patients.
About this study
In plain language
This study tests a new standing desk for people with Parkinson’s disease and asks about their experience using it. It compares standing with movement, standing still, and sitting to see how each affects walking. This first phase includes 12 sessions lasting 4 hours each.
This research is studying the use of a new type of standing desk in a small number of people to learn about the user experience for people with Parkinson's disease. 12 4-hour sessions will be performed to test the primary hypothesis that dynamic standing improves gait function compared to static standing and control sitting. This study has 2 phases. Phase 1 will be an open-label study and Phase 2 will be an in-lab randomized controlled trial pilot study. This is phase 1 of the study.
Compensation is read from the study's own description and may be missing — always confirm with the study team.
Eligibility
Who can join
- You have been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.
Who can't join
- You cannot stand or walk without a device to help you.
- Standing causes symptoms that make joining unsafe or uncomfortable, such as dizziness, low blood pressure when standing, severe leg or back pain, or medicine side effects. Other health or mental health conditions that make joining unsafe also exclude you.
- You have a history of heart or lung disease that causes symptoms.
- You have a history of active rheumatic arthritis (joint swelling and pain), or long-term pain that limits daily life and requires narcotic pain medicine.
- You have had a stroke or another nervous system condition with major lasting problems with feeling or movement.
- You show signs of dementia: a score below 24 on either listed memory and thinking test, plus major trouble with daily tasks.
- You have open sores from poor blood flow in your veins or severely swollen, twisted veins.
- You are pregnant. Women who could become pregnant will have a urine pregnancy test before the DXA scan.
Simplified for readability. The official criteria below are what the study team uses.
Official eligibility criteria
Inclusion Criteria: * Diagnosis of Parkinson's Disease Exclusion Criteria: * Inability to stand or walk without an assistive device * History of symptoms in stance that preclude safe and comfortable participation, such as dizziness and lightheadedness, orthostasis, severe symptomatic leg or back musculoskeletal pain, or medication side effects * Any other history of medical or psychiatric comorbidity, precluding safe participation in the project. * History of symptomatic cardiovascular or pulmonary disease * History of active rheumatic arthritis * History of stroke or other neurologic conditions with significant residual sensorimotor deficits * History of disabling chronic pain syndrome requiring narcotic analgesics * Evidence of dementia (Mini Mental State Exam (or Montreal Cognitive Assessment test) \<24 and significant impairment in activities of daily living) * Venous ulcerative stasis or severe varicosities. * Pregnancy as determined by urine pregnancy test prior to DXA procedure in women of childbearing potential.
