What to expect
No one can promise a trial will help you personally — that is what the research is trying to find out.
What participation involves
- Procedures mentioned: Questionnaires
Only what the study's summary and detailed description on ClinicalTrials.gov say. Time periods may describe the whole study or a part of it — ask the study team what applies to you.
Show the study's own words
- "Participants will be asked to complete short questionnaires about how they view their risk and what influenced their treatment decision."
- Compensation
- Not stated
- Study-related exams and procedures are typically provided at no cost. This is how many trials work in general — confirm the details for this study with the study team.
- Participants are monitored closely by the research team throughout the study.
- Some participants may receive access to an investigational treatment, which is still being studied.
- Your participation helps researchers learn whether this approach could help future patients.
About this study
In plain language
This study follows adults who had one polyp with early cancer removed from the colon or rectum during a colonoscopy. It looks at the risk that cancer stays, comes back, or spreads, and how patients and doctors choose surgery or close follow-up. The study gives no treatment; patients and their doctors decide their care as usual.
The purpose of this study is to learn more about malignant colorectal polyps (early colorectal cancers removed during colonoscopy) and the risk that cancer remains, comes back, or spreads after the polyp is removed. The researchers also want to understand how patients and doctors make decisions about whether to have surgery or to be followed closely without surgery after a malignant polyp is removed. This is an observational study. Participants will not receive any study treatment, and their care will be decided by them and their doctors as usual. The researchers will collect information from participants' medical records, including test results, imaging scans, lab work, and pathology reports, and may collect images from colonoscopy and copies of the pathology slides of the polyp. Participants will be asked to complete short questionnaires about how they view their risk and what influenced their treatment decision. The researchers will follow participants' health over time through their regular doctor visits; if no visit is scheduled, a member of the study team will contact participants by phone at 1, 3, and 5 years after they join the study.
Compensation is read from the study's own description and may be missing — always confirm with the study team.
Eligibility
Who can join
- You are age 18 or older.
- You had one polyp with early cancer in the colon or rectum. The cancer grew into the layer below the inner lining, but not into the muscle layer.
- The cancer started in an adenomatous or serrated polyp, two types of growths in the bowel lining.
- The polyp was removed during colonoscopy using a wire loop or a method called EMR or ESD to remove tissue.
- Lab testing of the removed tissue confirmed the cancer within 90 days before you join.
Who can't join
- You had more than one polyp with cancer.
Simplified for readability. The official criteria below are what the study team uses.
Official eligibility criteria
Inclusion Criteria: * Age 18 years or older * A single malignant colorectal polyp, defined as a colorectal adenocarcinoma invading the submucosa but not the muscularis propria (pT1), arising in an adenomatous or serrated polyp * Endoscopic resection of the malignant polyp by snare polypectomy, endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR), or endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) * Pathologic confirmation of the malignant polyp within 90 days before enrollment Exclusion Criteria: \- More than one malignant polyp
