What to expect

No one can promise a trial will help you personally — that is what the research is trying to find out.

What participation involves

  • Procedures mentioned: Interviews, Questionnaires, Pills

Only what the study's summary and detailed description on ClinicalTrials.gov say. Time periods may describe the whole study or a part of it — ask the study team what applies to you.

Show the study's own words
  • "The clinician/provider portion includes audio recording of multidisciplinary tumor board discussions and an optional post-study semi-structured interview with clinicians/providers to understand experiences with the INSPIRE intervention, including feasibility, usefulness, workflow considerations, and implementation challenges."
  • "Patient Participants Patients who agree to participate will complete patient-reported questionnaires at baseline, 3 months, and 6 months."
  • "Questionnaires may be completed online by text or email, by phone with responses entered by a research assistant, in person on a tablet, or on paper, based on patient preference."
  • "The baseline questionnaire will include questions about health, daily function, quality of life, nutrition, cognition, social support, caregiver support, treatment preferences, and decision-making preferences."
  • "For patients in the initial observational cohort, baseline questionnaire completion may occur within 2 weeks of enrollment."
  • "For patients in the randomized intervention component, completion of the baseline questionnaire will be required before tumor board presentation."
Compensation
Not stated
  • Study-related exams and procedures are typically provided at no cost. This is how many trials work in general — confirm the details for this study with the study team.
  • Participants are monitored closely by the research team throughout the study.
  • Some participants may receive access to an investigational treatment, which is still being studied.
  • Your participation helps researchers learn whether this approach could help future patients.

About this study

In plain language

The INSPIRE study tests what happens when cancer care teams use patients’ electronic reports about their health during team meetings. It looks at care choices, care received, use of health services, staff workload, and patient health reports. It includes adults with suspected or confirmed pancreatic, breast, or gynecologic cancer (cancer of the female reproductive organs), and their care team members.

The purpose of the study is to characterize baseline multidisciplinary tumor board (MDTB) context and variability, evaluate the relationship between baseline fitness of patients with cancer and initial treatment recommendations, and assess the impact of the INSPIRE intervention, which involves including electronic patient reported outcomes (ePROs) within MDTB on MDTB discussion content, provider burden, treatment recommended and received, healthcare utilization, and patient-reported outcomes.

Compensation is read from the study's own description and may be missing — always confirm with the study team.

Eligibility

Who can join

  • Patients must be age 18 or older.
  • Patients must have suspected or confirmed pancreatic, breast, or gynecologic cancer, at any stage, within 8 weeks of diagnosis.
  • Patients must plan to get treatment at a study site.
  • Patients must speak English or Spanish fluently.
  • Patients must be scheduled for a tumor board meeting, where cancer care experts discuss their care.
  • Care team members must take part in a pancreatic, breast, or gynecologic tumor board at a study site. These members have agreed in advance to join.

Who can't join

  • Patients who plan to get cancer treatment outside the study site cannot join.
  • Patients who cannot speak English or Spanish cannot join.
  • Care team members may choose not to take part. Their parts of the team discussion will not be studied.

Simplified for readability. The official criteria below are what the study team uses.

Official eligibility criteria

Inclusion/Exclusion Criteria: We will include two populations: (1) patients and (2) clinical team members involved in the MDTB. Inclusion Criteria: * Inclusions Criteria- Patients: 1. aged 18 years or older; 2. with suspected or confirmed diagnosis of pancreatic, breast, and gynecologic cancer (all stages) within 8 weeks of diagnosis; 3. intention to be treated at a participating institution; 4. with verbal fluency in English or Spanish; and 5. scheduled to be discussed at MDTB. * Inclusion criteria - Clinicians: All clinical team members participating in the pancreatic, breast, or gynecologic MDTB at a participating site will be included and have pre-emptively agreed to participation. Exclusion Criteria: * Exclusion criteria - Patients: Individuals with plans to receive cancer treatment outside the participating institution and inability to speak English or Spanish. * Exclusion criteria - Clinician: Clinicians will retain the opportunity to opt-out of participation, in which case their portions of the discussion will not be included in the analysis; however, this is not anticipated based on pilot data.
