What to expect

No one can promise a trial will help you personally — that is what the research is trying to find out.

What participation involves

  • Procedures mentioned: Biopsies, Questionnaires, Interviews, Blood draws, Spinal tap (lumbar puncture)

Only what the study's summary and detailed description on ClinicalTrials.gov say. Time periods may describe the whole study or a part of it — ask the study team what applies to you.

Show the study's own words
  • "With the present project the investigators propose to study clinical and biological data (from peripheral blood and skin punch biopsy) in subjects with Young and Late Onset Parkinson's disease as well as non-affected subjects (controls) to identify characteristic biological traits for each for this groups."
  • "For each participant, the investigators will collect information about demographic data, clinical data related to the symptoms of Parkinson's disease through standard questionnaire, a clinical exam, and standard interview."
  • "A blood sample (from a peripheral vein) and skin punch biopsy will be collected to study genetic and biological markers of the disease."
  • "In a subgroup of subjects, biological data from the lumbar puncture will be collected and analyzed as well."
Compensation
Not stated
  • Study-related exams and procedures are typically provided at no cost. This is how many trials work in general — confirm the details for this study with the study team.
  • Participants are monitored closely by the research team throughout the study.
  • Some participants may receive access to an investigational treatment, which is still being studied.
  • Your participation helps researchers learn whether this approach could help future patients.

About this study

In plain language

This study looks at body processes linked to Parkinson’s disease that starts early in life. It aims to better understand the disease and find signs in the body that may help identify or track it. Adults with early- or later-onset Parkinson’s disease and adults without Parkinson’s disease may join.

Young Onset Parkinson's disease (YOPD) refers to a group of patients in which the disease starts earlier in life (before the age of 50 years) and has a profound impact on most of patient's life. Current knowledge regarding the mechanisms leading to development of Parkinson's disease in younger individuals is lacking, but their understanding is crucial for the successful design of therapeutic strategies and stratifying patients for clinical trials. With this research the investigators aim to clarify the contribution of relevant biological processes in patients with Young onset Parkinson's disease to help understanding disease mechanisms and biomarkers.

Compensation is read from the study's own description and may be missing — always confirm with the study team.

Eligibility

Who can join

  • All groups: Age 18 or older, of any sex, race, or ethnicity.
  • Early-onset group: Parkinson’s disease started at age 50 or younger and was confirmed by a doctor who specializes in movement disorders.
  • Early-onset group: Willing to have a skin punch biopsy, which removes a small piece of skin for testing.
  • Later-onset group: Parkinson’s disease started after age 50 and was confirmed by a doctor who specializes in movement disorders.
  • Healthy comparison group: Never diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, based on health history and the lead study doctor’s exam.

Who can't join

  • Have another condition that causes Parkinson’s-like symptoms, including symptoms caused by medicines.
  • Have a history of an autoimmune disease, where the body attacks itself, or a long-term disease that causes inflammation.
  • Have used medicines long-term that weaken or change the immune system, the body’s defense against illness.
  • Are pregnant.
  • Have a skin condition that would prevent removal of a small skin sample.

Simplified for readability. The official criteria below are what the study team uses.

Official eligibility criteria

Inclusion Criteria: YOPD cohort: 1. Male or female 18 years or older (inclusive) of any race and ethnicity 2. Diagnosis of Parkinson's disease (PD) confirmed by a movement disorder specialist and with an age of onset of less than or equal to the age of 50 years old 3. Willingness to undergo a skin punch biopsy LOPD cohort: 1. Male or female 18 years or older (inclusive) of any race and ethnicity 2. Diagnosis of PD confirmed by a movement disorder specialist and with an age of onset after the age of 50 years Healthy Control cohort: 1. Male or female 18 years or older (inclusive) of any race and ethnicity 2. Never been diagnosed with PD as reported by medical history and as assessed by study PI Exclusion Criteria: 1. Diagnosis of atypical parkinsonism (i.e. progressive supranuclear palsy, corticobasal degeneration, multiple system atrophy) or secondary parkinsonism (i.e. normal pressure hydrocephalus, drug-induced parkinsonism). 2. Clinical history of autoimmune or chronic inflammatory disorder or exposure to chronic immunosuppressant or immunomodulatory medications. 3. Pregnancy 4. Dermatological conditions that would prevent performing skin punch biopsies
