What to expect

No one can promise a trial will help you personally — that is what the research is trying to find out.

What participation involves

  • Time periods mentioned: 7 months
  • Procedures mentioned: Blood draws

Only what the study's summary and detailed description on ClinicalTrials.gov say. Time periods may describe the whole study or a part of it — ask the study team what applies to you.

Show the study's own words
  • "During the research study participants will have data collected and blood samples taken which will be used to evaluate the prevention and reduction of potential harms induced by prostate cancer treatment."
  • "Participants will be in this research for 7 months which includes 6-months of the exercise intervention along with 1-month post-intervention activities."
Compensation
Not stated
  • Study-related exams and procedures are typically provided at no cost. This is how many trials work in general — confirm the details for this study with the study team.
  • Participants are monitored closely by the research team throughout the study.
  • Some participants may receive access to an investigational treatment, which is still being studied.
  • Your participation helps researchers learn whether this approach could help future patients.

About this study

In plain language

This study tests how a guided strength and fitness program affects changes in the heart’s size and shape. It is for people with prostate cancer who will receive radiation from outside the body and treatment to lower testosterone for at least 6 months.

This research is being done to assess the impact of a supervised and structured strength and conditioning program on cardiac remodeling in participants with prostate cancer undergoing treatment with external beam radiation therapy and at least 6 months of Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) therapy.

Compensation is read from the study's own description and may be missing — always confirm with the study team.

Eligibility

Who can join

  • Have prostate adenocarcinoma, a type of cancer, confirmed by testing tissue or cells.
  • Have not taken GnRH medicines to lower testosterone in the past 12 months.
  • Plan to start GnRH medicine or have surgery to remove both testicles, with treatment intended to last at least 6 months.
  • Plan to start radiation treatment to the prostate.
  • Be fully active or able to do light work, even if hard physical activity is limited.
  • Be able to understand and willing to sign a consent form.
  • Have a starting total testosterone blood level above 230 ng/dL.
  • Speak English and be older than 18.

Who can't join

  • Have a health problem that prevents exercise testing, such as untreated blocked heart arteries, moderate or severe joint wear and tear, or a past stroke.
  • Receive or plan to receive other cancer treatment beyond the treatments allowed by the study. An antiandrogen, a medicine that blocks male hormones, is allowed during the first month.

Simplified for readability. The official criteria below are what the study team uses.

Official eligibility criteria

Inclusion Criteria: * Have histologically or cytologically confirmed adenocarcinoma of the prostate * Have not received GnRH agonist or antagonist within the last 12 months * Planned for initiation of a GnRH agonist or antagonist or bilateral orchiectomy with an intended treatment duration of ≥ 6 months * Planned for initiation of radiation therapy to the prostate. * ECOG performance status of 0 or 1 * Ability to understand and the willingness to sign a written informed consent document * Baseline serum total testosterone level \> 230 ng/dL (the accepted threshold for testosterone supplementation) * Speak English -\>18 years of age Exclusion Criteria: * Has a known medical condition that makes the subject unable to participate in exercise testing (e.g. unrevascularized coronary artery disease, moderate/severe osteoarthritis, prior stroke, or other conditions) * Receiving or planned to receive other cancer therapy not included in Eligibility Criterion 3.1.3 (other than an antiandrogen during the first month of therapy) * The following populations will not be considered for inclusion on this trial.
