What to expect

No one can promise a trial will help you personally — that is what the research is trying to find out.

What participation involves

Not stated in the study description — ask the study team about visits and procedures.

Compensation
Not stated
  • Study-related exams and procedures are typically provided at no cost. This is how many trials work in general — confirm the details for this study with the study team.
  • Participants are monitored closely by the research team throughout the study.
  • Some participants may receive access to an investigational treatment, which is still being studied.
  • Your participation helps researchers learn whether this approach could help future patients.

About this study

In plain language

This study looks at how people with Parkinson’s disease, people with mild thinking and memory problems, and younger adults discuss difficult topics. It also explores their views on dance, building community, and justice before and after the Adaptango performance process.

This study is being done to answer the question: How do people with Parkinson's disease, people with Mild Cognitive Impairment, and younger people process difficult topics in conversation? It will also explore themes related to dance, such as community building and justice, as perceived by persons with Parkinson's disease or Mild Cognitive Impairment, and younger individuals before and after the Adaptango performance process.

Compensation is read from the study's own description and may be missing — always confirm with the study team.

Eligibility

Who can join

  • Live in the greater Atlanta area and belong to one of the listed groups: people with Parkinson’s disease, younger adults, or the PLwD group. The listing does not explain PLwD.
  • For the Parkinson’s group, have a diagnosis from a doctor who specializes in Parkinson’s disease.
  • Score at least 18 on the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), a thinking and memory test. People in the PLwD group must score from 18 to 25.

Who can't join

  • Have a sudden illness that needs hospital care, uncontrolled heart failure, or a stroke within the past 3 years.
  • Have a condition that prevents participation, such as severe arthritis, trouble moving, uncontrolled high blood pressure or diabetes, kidney failure, or past chest pain during activity.
  • Take medicines that may harm thinking or memory, such as antipsychotics, opioids, stimulants, chemotherapy, or medicines for multiple sclerosis. For some memory medicines, joining is delayed until the dose has been steady for at least 3 months.
  • Have a disorder that affects your sense of reality, or have had a substance use disorder, major depression, or generalized anxiety disorder within 6 months of evaluation.
  • Have other brain or nerve conditions that could affect results, such as certain brain or spinal cord infections, seizures, brain tumors, lasting problems after a stroke, or a head injury causing more than 30 minutes of unconsciousness.
  • Cannot complete study tasks, clearly understand English, or give informed consent—understand the study and agree to join.
  • Have impaired thinking or decision-making. The listing gives this exclusion even though it also describes including people with mild thinking and memory problems.
  • Are not yet an adult, are pregnant, or are a prisoner.

Simplified for readability. The official criteria below are what the study team uses.

Official eligibility criteria

Inclusion Criteria: * Individuals (PWP, younger adults, PLwD) from the greater Atlanta area. Those in the PWP group must be diagnosed by a neurologist specialized in Parkinson's disease. * Score of at least 18 on the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA). Those who are in the PLwD group must score between 18 and 25 on the MoCA. Exclusion Criteria: * Acute medical illness requiring hospitalization * Uncontrolled congestive heart failure * History of stroke in the past three years * Inability to perform study procedures * Medical or physical conditions that would preclude participation (e.g., severe arthritis or mobility problems, uncontrolled hypertension or diabetes, renal failure, history of angina with activity) * Taking medications that could adversely affect cognition, e.g., antipsychotics, opioids, stimulants, chemotherapy, neurologic prescriptions to treat Multiple sclerosis. When applicable, enrollment will be delayed until dosages are stable on, e.g., Aricept, Namenda, anticholinesterase inhibitors, for at least 3 months * Psychotic disorders * Confounding neurologic conditions \[e.g., active central nervous system (CNS) opportunistic infections, seizure disorders, head injury with loss of consciousness \>30 minutes, intracranial neoplasms, stroke with neurological or neuropsychiatric sequelae\] * Substance Use Disorder, Major Depressive Disorder, and Generalized Anxiety Disorders within six months of evaluation * Unable to provide informed consent * Cognitively impaired individuals or individuals with impaired decision-making, individuals who are not yet adults, pregnant women, prisoners * Not able to clearly understand English
