This Protocol is a Sub-study Under the PPMI Program. It is a Longitudinal, Single-center Study to Assess the Performance of [18F]AV-133 Imaging Using High and Standard Resolution PET in Individuals Enrolled With Parkinson's Disease (PD) for up to 12 Months.
A Comparative Performance Study Between High and Standard Resolution Positron Emission Tomography Camera Using [18F]AV- 133 in Parkinson's Disease [Dual PET AV-133 in PD]

What to expect
No one can promise a trial will help you personally — that is what the research is trying to find out.
What participation involves
- Time periods mentioned: 12 months
- Procedures mentioned: Injections
Only what the study's summary and detailed description on ClinicalTrials.gov say. Time periods may describe the whole study or a part of it — ask the study team what applies to you.
Show the study's own words
- "Participants will be followed for up to 12 months."
- "After tracer injection, participants will be imaged on PET cameras at each imaging timepoint-one with the NX camera and one with a standard PET camera-in accordance with the Image Acquisition Protocol (IAP)."
- Compensation
- Not stated
- Study-related exams and procedures are typically provided at no cost. This is how many trials work in general — confirm the details for this study with the study team.
- Participants are monitored closely by the research team throughout the study.
- Some participants may receive access to an investigational treatment, which is still being studied.
- Your participation helps researchers learn whether this approach could help future patients.
About this study
In plain language
This study compares high-resolution and standard PET scans, which take pictures inside the body, using an injected tracer called [18F]AV-133. It is for adults with Parkinson’s disease and healthy adults already in the PPMI study. Participants will be followed for up to 12 months.
The study is a longitudinal, single-center study to assess progression of \[18F\]AV-133 imaging in PD participants. Participants will be followed for up to 12 months. Approximately 45 PD participants and 5 healthy control participants will be recruited from the ongoing PPMI Clinical 002 study. Participants will be comprehensively assessed at Baseline and follow up according to the Schedule of Activities. Participants will undergo PET imaging assessments with \[18F\]AV-133. After tracer injection, participants will be imaged on PET cameras at each imaging timepoint-one with the NX camera and one with a standard PET camera-in accordance with the Image Acquisition Protocol (IAP).
Compensation is read from the study's own description and may be missing — always confirm with the study team.
Eligibility
Who can join
- Be older than 18 and enrolled in the PPMI Clinical study, either with Parkinson’s disease or as a healthy participant.
- Be able to understand the study and agree to take part.
- Women must be unable to become pregnant or use a highly effective birth control method from 14 days before until at least 24 hours after the tracer injection.
- Being unable to become pregnant means having no periods for at least 12 months before the scan, or having surgery to tie both tubes or remove both ovaries or the uterus.
- Accepted birth control includes pills used for at least 3 months before injection, an IUD used for at least 2 months, or barrier methods such as a diaphragm or condoms with sperm-killing gel. Avoiding sex only on fertile days does not count.
- Women who can become pregnant must not be pregnant or breastfeeding. They must have a negative urine pregnancy test on the scan day before the injection.
Who can't join
- Use of tetrabenazine (TBZ), methylphenidate, reserpine, or an amphetamine-related drug within 1 month before the first tracer injection. These drugs may affect the scans.
- Any other medical or mental health condition, or an unusual lab result, that the study doctor thinks would prevent taking part.
Simplified for readability. The official criteria below are what the study team uses.
Official eligibility criteria
Inclusion Criteria: 1. Participants over the age of 18 who are enrolled in the PPMI Clinical protocol with a diagnosis of Parkinson's disease (PD) or Healthy Control participants enrolled in the PPMI Clinical protocol. 2. Able to provide informed consent. 3. Male or Female (females must meet additional criteria specified below as applicable) 1. Females must be of non-childbearing potential or using a highly effective method of birth control 14 days prior to until at least 24 hours after injection of \[18F\]AV-133 * Non-childbearing potential is defined as a female that must be either postmenopausal (no menses for at least 12 months prior to PET scan) or surgically sterile (bilateral tubal ligation, bilateral oophorectomy or hysterectomy). * Highly effective method of birth control is defined as practicing at least one of the following: A birth control method that results in a less than 1% per year failure rate when used consistently and correctly, such as oral contraceptives for at least 3 months prior to injection, an intrauterine device (IUD) for at least 2 months prior to injection, or barrier methods, e.g., diaphragm or combination condom and spermicide. Periodic abstinence (e.g., calendar, ovulation, symptothermal, post-ovulation methods) is not acceptable. 2. Females of childbearing potential must not be pregnant, breastfeeding or lactating. * Includes a negative urine pregnancy test prior to injection of \[18F\]AV-133 on day of PET scan. Exclusion Criteria: 1. Received any of the following medications that might interfere with \[18F\]AV-133 PET imaging: tetrabenazine (TBZ) or methylphenidate, reserpine, or amphetamine derivative, within 1 month prior to the Baseline \[18F\]AV-133 injection. 2. Any other medical or psychiatric condition or lab abnormality, which in the opinion of the investigator might preclude participation.
