What to expect
No one can promise a trial will help you personally — that is what the research is trying to find out.
What participation involves
Not stated in the study description — ask the study team about visits and procedures.
- Compensation
- Not stated
- Study-related exams and procedures are typically provided at no cost. This is how many trials work in general — confirm the details for this study with the study team.
- Participants are monitored closely by the research team throughout the study.
- Some participants may receive access to an investigational treatment, which is still being studied.
- Your participation helps researchers learn whether this approach could help future patients.
About this study
In plain language
This study looks at how the brain causes visual hallucinations, or seeing things that are not there, in people with Lewy body diseases. It is for adults with these diseases, with or without hallucinations, and healthy volunteers of similar ages. The goal is to help guide future treatments.
The goal of this basic experimental study involving humans (BESH) protocol is to improve the understanding of neural mechanisms underlying visual hallucinations in Lewy Body diseases to inform future treatment developments.
Compensation is read from the study's own description and may be missing — always confirm with the study team.
Eligibility
Who can join
- Be 18 to 90 years old.
- Speak English or Spanish fluently.
- For the patient group: have a Lewy body disease, including Parkinson’s disease, Parkinson’s disease dementia, or dementia with Lewy bodies.
- For the patient group: score at least 24 out of 30 on the MoCA, a test of memory and thinking.
- For the healthy volunteer group: be healthy and of a similar age to the patients.
- For the healthy volunteer group: score at least 26 out of 30 on the MoCA.
Who can't join
- A past brain injury or serious head injury.
- A history of major brain or nerve disorders other than Lewy body diseases.
- Drug or alcohol abuse or dependence that meets the study’s diagnostic rules.
- For parts of the study using MRI scans: any condition that makes an MRI unsafe, based on the MRI safety form.
Simplified for readability. The official criteria below are what the study team uses.
