What to expect
No one can promise a trial will help you personally — that is what the research is trying to find out.
What participation involves
- Time periods mentioned: 37 years
Only what the study's summary and detailed description on ClinicalTrials.gov say. Time periods may describe the whole study or a part of it — ask the study team what applies to you.
Show the study's own words
- "Study Aim 1 will use existing data from the prospective Pittsburgh Epidemiology of Diabetes Complications (EDC) study cohort, comprising 658 study participants who were diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in childhood (\<17 years old) and followed for health outcomes and clinical measures for up to 37 years beginning in 1986."
- Compensation
- Not stated
- Study-related exams and procedures are typically provided at no cost. This is how many trials work in general — confirm the details for this study with the study team.
- Participants are monitored closely by the research team throughout the study.
- Some participants may receive access to an investigational treatment, which is still being studied.
- Your participation helps researchers learn whether this approach could help future patients.
About this study
The goal of this observational study is to better understand how the amount of insulin people with type 1 diabetes are using relates to blood glucose control and the risk of complications. The main questions this study aims to answer are: 1) Is insulin dose related to the long-term risk of developing heart disease, kidney disease and other complications in people with type 1 diabetes, after accounting for blood glucose? and 2) Does insulin dose relate to early signs of heart and kidney disease (i.e., disease that is not clinically detectable) in people with type 1 diabetes who are using modern diabetes management regimens?
Compensation is read from the study's own description and may be missing — always confirm with the study team.
