What to expect
No one can promise a trial will help you personally — that is what the research is trying to find out.
What participation involves
Not stated in the study description — ask the study team about visits and procedures.
- Compensation
- Not stated
- Study-related exams and procedures are typically provided at no cost. This is how many trials work in general — confirm the details for this study with the study team.
- Participants are monitored closely by the research team throughout the study.
- Some participants may receive access to an investigational treatment, which is still being studied.
- Your participation helps researchers learn whether this approach could help future patients.
About this study
In plain language
This study checks whether two blood proteins rise during a heart attack and are higher in people who also develop heart failure. It is for adults having a heart attack and a comparison group of men age 60 or older without past heart attacks or heart disease. Researchers do not yet know if higher levels of these proteins are linked to heart attacks or any disease.
The purpose of this research is to determine if two proteins in the blood are increased during acute myocardial infarction and whether their levels are higher in those who develop heart failure than those who do not. These two proteins are produced and potentially released when the heart muscle is damaged. They may then be released into the blood and be detected by standard method in the research laboratory. At this time, detection of an increase in these proteins in the blood is not known to be associated with any disease or myocardial infarction.
Compensation is read from the study's own description and may be missing — always confirm with the study team.
Eligibility
Who can join
- Men and women age 18 or older having a heart attack confirmed by blood tests called CKMB or troponin.
- People having a heart attack may have heart failure or not. Heart failure means the heart does not pump or fill as it should.
- Signs of heart failure may include trouble breathing, crackling lung sounds, swelling, high pressure in neck veins, or fluid in the belly. Heart scans may also show heart failure.
- For the comparison group: men age 60 or older with no past heart attack or heart disease.
Who can't join
- Unable to give consent to join the study.
- Had any surgery in the 3 months before joining the study.
Simplified for readability. The official criteria below are what the study team uses.
Official eligibility criteria
Inclusion Criteria: * men and women, 18 years of age and over with acute myocardial infarction (determined by positive cardiac markers -CKMB/ troponin) with or without heart failure (dyspnea, rales, edema, elevated jugular venous pressure, ascites). * Heart failure can be diagnosed using imaging evidence such as dilated heart, poor contractile function or echocardiographic Doppler evidence of diastolic dysfunction or elevated right- or left-sided filling pressures * A control group of male subjects age 60 and older without history of MI or heart disease Exclusion Criteria: * Subjects unable to give consent * Subjects who have undergone cardiac or non-cardiac surgery in the 3 months prior to enrollment
