What to expect
No one can promise a trial will help you personally — that is what the research is trying to find out.
What participation involves
- Procedures mentioned: Blood draws
Only what the study's summary and detailed description on ClinicalTrials.gov say. Time periods may describe the whole study or a part of it — ask the study team what applies to you.
Show the study's own words
- "Baseline and one-year follow up blood samples including DNA as well as clinical characteristics, events leading up to heart failure diagnosis, etiology of heart failure, the presence and duration of other medical problems, laboratory, echocardiographic data and images, and therapy information will be obtained."
- Compensation
- Not stated
- Study-related exams and procedures are typically provided at no cost. This is how many trials work in general — confirm the details for this study with the study team.
- Participants are monitored closely by the research team throughout the study.
- Some participants may receive access to an investigational treatment, which is still being studied.
- Your participation helps researchers learn whether this approach could help future patients.
About this study
In plain language
This study follows people with and without heart failure over time to learn how different types of heart failure and heart muscle disease develop and worsen. It looks at health records, proteins, genes, other substances in the body, and heart images. The goal is to help match patients with treatments that work best and cause fewer side effects.
In this single-center, longitudinal observational study, we will comprehensively examine clinical characteristics, proteomic, metabolomic, genomic and imaging data to better understand how different heart failure types may develop and progress over time. We will evaluate distinct sub-groups of heart failure (also known as heart failure phenotypes) and cardiomyopathies including amyloidosis with an ultimate goal of bringing the right medications and therapy to the right patients to optimize benefit and minimized side effects, an effort to improve precision medicine in heart failure.
Compensation is read from the study's own description and may be missing — always confirm with the study team.
Eligibility
Who can join
- For people with heart failure: be age 18 or older.
- Have a history of heart failure symptoms, plus at least one of the supporting findings listed below.
- Blood test showing NT-proBNP above 125 pg/mL or BNP above 35 pg/mL. These substances can signal heart strain.
- Heart tests showing capillary wedge pressure or LVEDP of at least 15 mmHg. These measure pressure inside the heart.
- A cardiac index below 2.8 L/min/m², meaning the heart pumps too little blood for your body size.
- A chest image showing fluid buildup in the lungs.
- Symptoms improve after starting or increasing a water pill, which helps remove extra fluid.
- An exercise test showing that symptoms come from the heart.
Who can't join
- Kidney failure that requires dialysis, a treatment that filters the blood. This rule applies to all patients.
Simplified for readability. The official criteria below are what the study team uses.
Official eligibility criteria
Inclusion criteria for patients with HF: * 18 years and older * History of clinical symptoms consistent with HF and at least one of the following supporting evidence of HF: * NT-proBNP \> 125 pg/mL * BNP \> 35 pg/mL * Capillary wedge pressure ≥ 15 mmHg on right heart catheterization or CI \<2.8 L/min/m2 * LVEDP ≥ 15 mmHg * Radiographic evidence of pulmonary edema * Improvement in symptoms with diuretic initiation of increase * CPET evidence of cardiac etiology of symptoms HFpEF: LVEF ≥ 50% HFrEF: LVEF \<50% Exclusion criteria (for all patients, including both those with HFpEF and HFrEF): \- End stage renal disease on dialysis
