What to expect
No one can promise a trial will help you personally — that is what the research is trying to find out.
What participation involves
Not stated in the study description — ask the study team about visits and procedures.
- Compensation
- Not stated
- Study-related exams and procedures are typically provided at no cost. This is how many trials work in general — confirm the details for this study with the study team.
- Participants are monitored closely by the research team throughout the study.
- Some participants may receive access to an investigational treatment, which is still being studied.
- Your participation helps researchers learn whether this approach could help future patients.
About this study
In plain language
This study looks at how major, lasting weight loss changes how insulin controls the breakdown of fat. Researchers will study inflammation and fat breakdown before and after sleeve gastrectomy, a weight-loss surgery that makes the stomach smaller. It is for people with a BMI of 40 to 50.
It is not known how much improvement in insulin regulated lipolysis (the breakdown of triglycerides) occurs following substantial, sustained weight loss. Researchers will test the effects of inflammation and lipolysis regulation in people before and after bariatric surgery (sleeve gastrectomy) to answer these questions.
Compensation is read from the study's own description and may be missing — always confirm with the study team.
Eligibility
Who can join
- Have a body mass index (BMI) of 40 to 50. BMI is a measure based on height and weight.
- Have no current physical illness that would limit movement or weight loss after surgery.
Who can't join
- Have type 1 or type 2 diabetes, or a fasting blood sugar level of 126 mg/dL or higher.
- Have active disease in the arteries that supply blood to the heart.
- Take part in planned exercise more than twice a week for 30 minutes or longer each time.
- Smoke.
- Take medicines that affect how the body handles fat, such as beta blockers or corticosteroids.
- Have poor kidney function, with a blood creatinine level above 1.5 mg/dL.
- Have ongoing, active liver disease, with bilirubin above 17 mmol/L, AST above 144 IU/L, or ALT above 165 IU/L. These are blood tests related to liver health.
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Simplified for readability. The official criteria below are what the study team uses.
Official eligibility criteria
Inclusion Criteria: * BMI 40 - 50 kg/m2. * Mo active physical illness that would interfere with mobility or weight loss after bariatric surgery Exclusion Criteria: * Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes diagnosis or fasting plasma glucose ≥126 mg/dL * Active coronary artery disease * Participation in structured exercise (\>2 times per week for 30 minutes or longer) * Smoking * Medications known to affect adipose tissue metabolism (e.g., beta blockers, corticosteroids) * Renal insufficiency (serum creatinine \> 1.5mg/dl) * Chronic active liver disease (Bilirubin \> 17mmol/L, AST \> 144 IU/L, or ALT\>165IU/L) * Pregnancy or breastfeeding.
