What to expect

No one can promise a trial will help you personally — that is what the research is trying to find out.

What participation involves

  • Visits mentioned: 5 visits
  • Procedures mentioned: Wearing a device, Questionnaires

Only what the study's summary and detailed description on ClinicalTrials.gov say. Time periods may describe the whole study or a part of it — ask the study team what applies to you.

  • "Develop a NIRSIT testing protocol that can be administered in the diagnostic setting and reliably distinguishes the symptoms and severity of depression, with the help of repeated measure (up to five visits per subject) comparison of patients being treated for Major Depressive Disorder with control, non-depressed subjects."
  • "In 2009, Hitachi released the first battery operated wireless/ wearable device."
  • "Psychiatry collaborators will be informed of survey response that indicates possible suicide ideation."
Compensation
Not stated
  • Study-related exams and procedures are typically provided at no cost. This is how many trials work in general — confirm the details for this study with the study team.
  • Participants are monitored closely by the research team throughout the study.
  • Some participants may receive access to an investigational treatment, which is still being studied.
  • Your participation helps researchers learn whether this approach could help future patients.

About this study

In plain language

This study aims to develop a near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) test to help identify depression symptoms and how severe they are. It compares adults being treated for major depression with adults who are not depressed, with up to five visits per person.

Develop a NIRSIT testing protocol that can be administered in the diagnostic setting and reliably distinguishes the symptoms and severity of depression, with the help of repeated measure (up to five visits per subject) comparison of patients being treated for Major Depressive Disorder with control, non-depressed subjects.

Compensation is read from the study's own description and may be missing — always confirm with the study team.

Eligibility

Who can join

  • Everyone must sign a form agreeing to take part in the study.
  • Adults without depression must be older than 18.
  • Adults with depression must be older than 18, have a diagnosis of major depression, and receive depression treatment at SFVAMC.

Who can't join

  • Anyone who cannot sign the form agreeing to take part.
  • For the group without depression: depression, anxiety, substance abuse, mood disorders, or personality disorders.
  • For either group: psychotic disorders, such as schizophrenia, which can make it hard to tell what is real.
  • For either group: Alzheimer's disease or other dementias that cause serious problems with memory and thinking.
  • For either group: conditions that damage or change the brain's structure, including brain injury, stroke, tumor, or tangled blood vessels.
  • For people with depression: not receiving depression treatment at SFVAMC.

Simplified for readability. The official criteria below are what the study team uses.
