What to expect
No one can promise a trial will help you personally — that is what the research is trying to find out.
What participation involves
- Procedures mentioned: Urine samples, CT scans, Ultrasound, Physical exams, Questionnaires
Only what the study's summary and detailed description on ClinicalTrials.gov say. Time periods may describe the whole study or a part of it — ask the study team what applies to you.
Show the study's own words
- "All patients may undergo a sleep study (i.e. hospital or home-based), physical examination, questionnaires, blood and urine samples, ultrasound scan of the heart and brachial artery in the arm, CT scan, DEXA scan, paced breathing test, cardiopulmonary test and chemo-sensitivity test."
- Compensation
- Not stated
- Study-related exams and procedures are typically provided at no cost. This is how many trials work in general — confirm the details for this study with the study team.
- Participants are monitored closely by the research team throughout the study.
- Some participants may receive access to an investigational treatment, which is still being studied.
- Your participation helps researchers learn whether this approach could help future patients.
About this study
In plain language
This study compares Somali patients who have obstructive sleep apnea with people without it and people from other racial or ethnic groups. Sleep apnea means breathing stops and starts during sleep because the airway is blocked. The study looks at how inherited traits, body function, and sex may relate to the risk of heart and blood vessel disease.
The investigators seek to advance the understanding of obstructive sleep apnea as it relates to different ethnic origins as well as sex differences. The investigators will compare Somali patients with known obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) to individuals without OSA, and to individuals of other ethnic/racial origins to determine the risk factors (genetic and/or physiologic) associated with developing cardiovascular diseases. This will help the investigators to understand the unique sleep pathology of individuals of African descent.
Compensation is read from the study's own description and may be missing — always confirm with the study team.
