What to expect

No one can promise a trial will help you personally — that is what the research is trying to find out.

What participation involves

Not stated in the study description — ask the study team about visits and procedures.

Compensation
Not stated
  • Study-related exams and procedures are typically provided at no cost. This is how many trials work in general — confirm the details for this study with the study team.
  • Participants are monitored closely by the research team throughout the study.
  • Some participants may receive access to an investigational treatment, which is still being studied.
  • Your participation helps researchers learn whether this approach could help future patients.

About this study

In plain language

This study collects and reviews detailed images of the retina, the light-sensing layer at the back of the eye. It aims to improve the use of adaptive optics (AO) imaging in eye care. It is for adults age 21 or older, with one group for people with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG), a disease that damages the eye’s nerve.

The objective of the study is to collect and assess adaptive optics (AO) retinal images from human subjects in support of projects to demonstrate, advance, and enhance clinical use of AO technology.

Compensation is read from the study's own description and may be missing — always confirm with the study team.

Eligibility

Who can join

  • You are age 21 or older.
  • You can follow instructions during imaging, like those given during an eye exam.
  • You can understand and sign a form agreeing to join the study.
  • For group 2, you have been diagnosed with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG).

Who can't join

  • You are under 21, or an eye condition prevents clear images, such as trouble keeping your gaze steady or cloudiness inside the eye.
  • Your vision correction is outside the range of +4 to -8 diopters, the units used for lens strength.
  • You have had a bad reaction to eye drops that widen your pupils.
  • You have had sudden angle-closure glaucoma, or are at risk because of a narrow drainage angle in your eye.
  • For group 2, you do not meet the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s criteria for POAG.
  • For RBF experiment participants only: you have a condition that makes extra oxygen unsafe, such as COPD, emphysema, asthma, or another lung disease; you depend on oxygen support; or your starting blood oxygen level is below 95%.
  • You test positive for COVID-19 when first joining, or you have short-term or lasting light sensitivity caused by COVID-19.
  • You work under Dr. Hammer’s direct supervision.

Simplified for readability. The official criteria below are what the study team uses.

Official eligibility criteria

Inclusion Criteria: 1. Are 21 years of age or older. 2. Have the ability to cooperate with instructions during adaptive optics imaging (similar to instructions given during a clinical eye exam). 3. Have the ability to understand and sign an informed consent. 4. Have been diagnosed with POAG (cohort 2). Exclusion Criteria: 1. Are under 21 years of age. 2. Have a condition which prevents adequate images from being obtained (e.g. unstable fixation or media opacity). 3. Have visual correction outside of the range +4 diopters (D) to -8 D. 4. Have a history of adverse reaction to mydriatic drops. 5. Have a predisposition to (i.e., narrow iridocorneal angle) or any history of acute angle closure glaucoma (AACG). 6. Do not meet the criteria for POAG as defined by the American Academy of Ophthalmology Practice Patterns (cohort 2) 7. Have any health conditions that would contraindicate oxygen supplementation, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), emphysema, asthma, or any other obstructive or restrictive lung disease (RBF experiment participants only). 8. Have a dependency on oxygen support or a baseline oxygen saturation \<95% (RBF experiment participants only). 9. Have tested positive for COVID-19 at initial enrollment or have acute or chronic photophobia as a result of contraction. 10. Are working under the direct supervision of Dr. Hammer.
