What to expect

No one can promise a trial will help you personally — that is what the research is trying to find out.

What participation involves

Not stated in the study description — ask the study team about visits and procedures.

Compensation
Not stated
  • Study-related exams and procedures are typically provided at no cost. This is how many trials work in general — confirm the details for this study with the study team.
  • Participants are monitored closely by the research team throughout the study.
  • Some participants may receive access to an investigational treatment, which is still being studied.
  • Your participation helps researchers learn whether this approach could help future patients.

About this study

In plain language

This study looks at fat buildup in the heart’s lower right chamber in adults with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), or high blood pressure in the lung arteries. It studies how this fat relates to heart function, exercise ability, and health outcomes, and what may cause it to build up.

The investigators propose to study the relationship between right ventricle (RV) steatosis and RV function, exercise capacity, and outcomes in humans with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) and to identify potential drivers of lipid accumulation.

Compensation is read from the study's own description and may be missing — always confirm with the study team.

Eligibility

Who can join

  • You are 18 or older.
  • You have PAH diagnosed under World Health Organization guidelines. Listed types include PAH with no known cause, inherited PAH, and PAH linked to connective tissue disease, drugs, or toxins.
  • Your PAH medicines have been stable for 3 months. Changes to IV prostacyclin for side effects and to diuretics (water pills) are allowed.
  • You are in World Health Organization class I–III, which describes how much symptoms limit your activity.
  • You can walk.
  • You can have MRI/MRS scans, which use magnets to study the heart and its tissues.
  • You can do a 6-minute walk test and an exercise test that checks your heart and lungs.

Who can't join

  • You are pregnant.
  • Your PAH has a cause other than an unknown cause, an inherited condition, connective tissue disease, drugs, or toxins.
  • You have World Health Organization class IV heart failure, the most severe activity-limit class.
  • You need oxygen all the time.
  • You cannot have MRI/MRS scans or do the required walking or heart-and-lung exercise tests.
  • You have metal in your body that is attracted to magnets and makes a heart MRI unsafe.

Simplified for readability. The official criteria below are what the study team uses.

Official eligibility criteria

Inclusion criteria: * ≥ 18 years old * Diagnosed with idiopathic, heritable, connective tissue disease-associated PAH, associated pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), or drug-or toxin-associated PAH according to World Health Organization (WHO) consensus recommendations. * Stable PAH-specific medication regimen for three months prior to enrollment. Adjustments in IV prostacyclin for side effect management are allowed. Diuretic adjustments are permitted. * WHO Functional Class I-III * Ambulatory * Able to have an MRI/MRS, perform a 6MWD test, and cardiopulmonary exercise test Exclusion criteria: * Pregnancy * Diagnosis of PAH etiology other than idiopathic, heritable, connective tissue disease - associated PAH or associated with drugs and toxins * WHO Functional class IV heart failure * Requirement for continuous oxygen * Unable to have an MRI/MRS, perform a 6MWD test, or cardiopulmonary exercise test. * Patients with implanted/embedded ferromagnetic material that would preclude cardiac MRI
