What to expect

No one can promise a trial will help you personally — that is what the research is trying to find out.

What participation involves

Not stated in the study description — ask the study team about visits and procedures.

Compensation
Not stated
  • Study-related exams and procedures are typically provided at no cost. This is how many trials work in general — confirm the details for this study with the study team.
  • Participants are monitored closely by the research team throughout the study.
  • Some participants may receive access to an investigational treatment, which is still being studied.
  • Your participation helps researchers learn whether this approach could help future patients.

About this study

In plain language

This study compares two medicines taken by mouth, nifedipine and labetalol, to see which controls high blood pressure better after childbirth. It is for women who need blood pressure medicine after giving birth, whether their high blood pressure is new or started earlier.

The purpose of this investigator-initiated randomized control trial is to determine whether oral Nifedipine versus oral Labetalol is superior in controlling high blood pressures in the postpartum period.

Compensation is read from the study's own description and may be missing — always confirm with the study team.

Eligibility

Who can join

  • You are female.
  • You have new high blood pressure after the placenta is delivered, or you had high blood pressure before and need medicine after childbirth.
  • For new high blood pressure, the top number must be 140 or higher or the bottom number 90 or higher on at least 2 checks at least 4 hours apart. Or, the top number must be 160 or higher or the bottom number above 110 for more than 15 minutes.

Who can't join

  • You have a history of moderate asthma with ongoing symptoms, disease in the arteries that supply the heart, heart failure (the heart does not pump well), AV heart block (a problem with the heart's electrical signals), or fluid in the lungs.

Simplified for readability. The official criteria below are what the study team uses.
