What to expect
No one can promise a trial will help you personally — that is what the research is trying to find out.
What participation involves
Not stated in the study description — ask the study team about visits and procedures.
- Compensation
- Not stated
- Study-related exams and procedures are typically provided at no cost. This is how many trials work in general — confirm the details for this study with the study team.
- Participants are monitored closely by the research team throughout the study.
- Some participants may receive access to an investigational treatment, which is still being studied.
- Your participation helps researchers learn whether this approach could help future patients.
About this study
In plain language
This study looks at how obesity affects the heart and blood pressure during different breathing exercises. It is for adults with a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or less who meet the other study rules.
The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of obesity on cardiovascular responses during various breathing maneuvers.
Compensation is read from the study's own description and may be missing — always confirm with the study team.
Eligibility
Who can join
- Your BMI, a measure of weight compared with height, is 40 or less.
Who can't join
- Your weight has not stayed stable over the past 6 months.
- You have heart or blood vessel disease, nerve disease, kidney or liver disease, or a disease such as diabetes. Certain high pressures and blood volumes inside the heart, or heart failure that worsens after breathing muscle training, also rule you out.
- You have, or have had, uncontrolled high blood pressure above 140/90 mmHg. Blood pressure medicines are allowed.
- You have diagnosed sleep apnea (blocked breathing during sleep), signs of airway disease, or asthma with poor awareness of severe symptoms or trouble breathing. A cold, sinus infection, or other breathing tract infection also rules you out.
- You use tobacco or nicotine products, including cigarettes or vapes, now or have used them regularly within the past 6 months.
- You have had weight-loss surgery or recent belly surgery. You have a belly hernia (tissue pushing through a weak spot), a torn eardrum, or another ear condition.
- You are not yet an adult, or you are a prisoner.
- You are pregnant, breastfeeding, or past menopause (when monthly periods have ended). Pregnancy is checked by asking you and doing a urine test.
Simplified for readability. The official criteria below are what the study team uses.
Official eligibility criteria
Inclusion Criteria: • Body mass index values of ≤40 kg/m\^2 Exclusion Criteria: * Not weight stable (\<5% change in body mass over the past six months) * Overt cardiovascular, neurological, renal, liver, and/or metabolic illness (e.g., diabetes mellitus) * Current, or history of uncontrolled, Stage 2 hypertension (blood pressure \>140 / 90 mmHg; anti-hypertensive medications are permitted) * Diagnosed obstructive sleep apnea * Previous bariatric surgery * Diagnosis or signs (e.g., values below the lower limit of normal) of overt airway disease(s) * Current or recent (regular use within the past 6 months) use of tobacco or nicotine products (e.g., cigarettes, vaping) * Per the POWERbreathe® company: * Patients who have undergone recent abdominal surgery and those with abdominal hernia. * Asthma patients who have a very low symptom perception and suffer from frequent, severe exacerbations or with an abnormally low perception of dyspnoea. * If a patient is suffering from a ruptured eardrum or any other condition of the ear. * Patients with marked elevated left ventricular end-diastolic volume and pressure. * Patients with worsening heart failure signs and symptoms after a respiratory/inspiratory muscle training (IMT) session * If you are suffering from a cold, sinusitis, or respiratory tract infection, we advise that you do not use your POWERbreathe IMT device. * Individuals who are not yet adults (infants, children, teenagers) * Pregnant (self-reported and urine pregnancy test conducted), lactating (self-reported), or post-menopausal (self-reported) females * Prisoners
