What to expect

No one can promise a trial will help you personally — that is what the research is trying to find out.

What participation involves

  • Procedures mentioned: CT scans

Only what the study's summary and detailed description on ClinicalTrials.gov say. Time periods may describe the whole study or a part of it — ask the study team what applies to you.

Show the study's own words
  • "After screening assessments, participants will undergo PET/CT scan imaging with AV-1451."
Compensation
Not stated
  • Study-related exams and procedures are typically provided at no cost. This is how many trials work in general — confirm the details for this study with the study team.
  • Participants are monitored closely by the research team throughout the study.
  • Some participants may receive access to an investigational treatment, which is still being studied.
  • Your participation helps researchers learn whether this approach could help future patients.

About this study

In plain language

This study uses PET/CT brain scans to look at tau, a protein in the brain. It is for older adults in the MPC study who have mild cognitive impairment (mild problems with memory or thinking) or Alzheimer's disease. Researchers will compare the scans with health information, thinking tests, and other health markers to better understand differences in Alzheimer's and related conditions.

To collect Tau PET/CT imaging in older adults diagnosed with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) or Alzheimer's Disease (AD) in the Mismatch Prospective Cohort Study (MPC-Tau) study to determine relationship to clinical, cognitive, and other biomarker data. Findings from this study will likely provide insight into the phenotypic variability of Alzheimer's Disease and other related pathologies.

Compensation is read from the study's own description and may be missing — always confirm with the study team.

Eligibility

Who can join

  • You must already be enrolled in the MPC study at UPenn or MGH.
  • You must have a reliable study partner who can go with you to the PET/CT scan.
  • You must have a clear enough brain MRI within 6 months before the study PET/CT scan. It must include detailed 3T MRI images of the medial temporal lobes, brain areas involved in memory.

Who can't join

  • You have a physical or mental health condition that the study doctor thinks could make participation unsafe or prevent you from completing the study.
  • Your MRI shows a major stroke, a mass, or another brain change that could make the PET/CT scan hard to study.
  • A study doctor or your treating doctor thinks you cannot tolerate the scans or should not have them for medical reasons.
  • You report a history of serious, ongoing alcohol or drug misuse.
  • You are a female participant of child-bearing age, based on what you report.

Simplified for readability. The official criteria below are what the study team uses.

Official eligibility criteria

Inclusion Criteria: 1. Enrolled in MPC study (Protocol 850160 at UPenn; Protocol 2022P002447 at MGH). 2. Reliable study partner to accompany participant to the PET/CT scan 3. A brain MRI must be performed within 6 months prior to their study AV-1451 TAU PET/CT scan date and be deemed of adequate quality that the scan may be used for study analysis, including 3T high-resolution imaging of medial temporal lobe structures. Exclusion Criteria: 1. Have any medical or psychiatric conditions that, in the opinion of the investigator, would compromise the subject's safety or successful participation in the study. 2. Have evidence of structural abnormalities such as major stroke or mass on MRI that is likely to interfere with analysis of the PET/CT scan. 3. Inability to tolerate or contraindication to imaging procedures in the opinion of an investigator or treating physician. 4. Have a history of significant ongoing alcohol or substance abuse based on self- report. 5. Female participants of child-bearing age will not be able to participate in this study, determined by self-report.
