What to expect
No one can promise a trial will help you personally — that is what the research is trying to find out.
What participation involves
Not stated in the study description — ask the study team about visits and procedures.
- Compensation
- Not stated
- Study-related exams and procedures are typically provided at no cost. This is how many trials work in general — confirm the details for this study with the study team.
- Participants are monitored closely by the research team throughout the study.
- Some participants may receive access to an investigational treatment, which is still being studied.
- Your participation helps researchers learn whether this approach could help future patients.
About this study
In plain language
This study looks at how electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) affects sleep, waking, and how brain networks share information. ECT is a treatment that uses electricity to cause seizures. The study is for people referred for a first ECT treatment series for depression that has not improved enough with medicines.
Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) alleviates treatment-resistant depression (TRD) through repeated generalized seizures. The goal of this study is to evaluate how ECT impacts sleep-wake regulation and efficiency of information transfer in functional networks in different states of arousal.
Compensation is read from the study's own description and may be missing — always confirm with the study team.
Eligibility
Who can join
- Referred for a first ECT treatment series for major depression or bipolar depression, which is depression linked to bipolar disorder.
- Depression has not improved enough after trying at least two antidepressant medicines, each at a high enough dose and for long enough.
Who can't join
- Have schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder, mental health conditions that can affect a person's sense of reality.
- Cannot tolerate wearing the Dreem device used to record sleep.
Simplified for readability. The official criteria below are what the study team uses.
Official eligibility criteria
Inclusion Criteria: * Referral for initial ECT index course for Treatment-Resistant Depression (TRD), unipolar major depressive disorder or bipolar depression. Historic failure of response or remission to at least two antidepressant medications of sufficient dose and duration will be used for TRD diagnostic. Exclusion Criteria: * Diagnoses of schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorders. * Subjects who are unable to tolerate the Dreem device for sleep recordings will be excluded from the study.
