What to expect

No one can promise a trial will help you personally — that is what the research is trying to find out.

What participation involves

  • Procedures mentioned: MRI scans, Ultrasound, Biopsies

Only what the study's summary and detailed description on ClinicalTrials.gov say. Time periods may describe the whole study or a part of it — ask the study team what applies to you.

Show the study's own words
  • "This phase III trial compares the use of contrast-enhanced multiparametric ultrasound (mp-US) to multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mp-MRI) for the diagnosis of clinically significant prostate cancer (PCa)."
  • "Perflutren lipid michrosphere (Definity) is a contrast agent that uses microbubbles to enhance ultrasound images of the prostate."
  • "Doctors hope to learn if the Definity-enhanced mp-US imaging technique can accurately direct targeted biopsy for the detection of clinically significant prostate cancer when compared to standard of care mp-MRI."
  • "To demonstrate non-inferiority between the detection rate of clinically significant PCa with 3-dimensional (3D) mp-US + systematic biopsy compared to the detection rate of mp-MRI + systematic biopsy."
  • "To compare the positive yield of targeted biopsy cores based on mp-US + systematic biopsy with targeted biopsy based on mp-MRI + systematic biopsy, for detection of clinically significant PCa."
  • "To demonstrate non-inferiority of a biopsy approach utilizing targeted biopsy cores based on mp-US compared with targeted biopsy based on mp-MRI, for detection of clinically significant PCa."
Compensation
Not stated
  • Study-related exams and procedures are typically provided at no cost. This is how many trials work in general — confirm the details for this study with the study team.
  • Participants are monitored closely by the research team throughout the study.
  • Some participants may receive access to an investigational treatment, which is still being studied.
  • Your participation helps researchers learn whether this approach could help future patients.

About this study

In plain language

This study compares ultrasound using Definity, a contrast agent with tiny bubbles that make images clearer, with MRI scans to find important prostate cancers. Doctors want to see how well ultrasound guides a biopsy, which takes small tissue samples to check for cancer. The study is for men age 18 or older who are scheduled for a prostate biopsy.

This phase III trial compares the use of contrast-enhanced multiparametric ultrasound (mp-US) to multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mp-MRI) for the diagnosis of clinically significant prostate cancer (PCa). A mp-US is a procedure in which a probe that sends out high-energy sound waves is inserted into the rectum. The sound waves are bounced off internal tissues or organs and make echoes. The echoes form a picture of body tissue called a sonogram. Perflutren lipid michrosphere (Definity) is a contrast agent that uses microbubbles to enhance ultrasound images of the prostate. Doctors hope to learn if the Definity-enhanced mp-US imaging technique can accurately direct targeted biopsy for the detection of clinically significant prostate cancer when compared to standard of care mp-MRI.

Compensation is read from the study's own description and may be missing — always confirm with the study team.

Eligibility

Who can join

  • You must be male and at least 18 when you give written consent.
  • You must be scheduled for a prostate biopsy because of a high PSA blood test result (over 3.0 ng/ml), PSA rising more than 0.75 ng/ml per year, or an abnormal prostate exam done with a finger through the rectum.
  • You must be able and willing to give written consent for the prostate ultrasound with contrast and the extra study biopsies.

Who can't join

  • You took part in a trial of an experimental drug within the past 30 days.
  • You have a known or suspected allergy to perflutren, polyethylene glycol (PEG), or any other ingredient in Definity.
  • You have had treatment for prostate cancer, including hormone treatment.
  • Your treating doctor says your condition is unstable, you are very ill, or you are near death.

Simplified for readability. The official criteria below are what the study team uses.

Official eligibility criteria

Inclusion Criteria: * Subject must be scheduled for a prostate biopsy, based on an elevated PSA (\> 3.0ng/ml) per most recent National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) guidelines, elevated PSA velocity (\> 0.75ng/ml/year), or abnormal digital rectal examination * Subject must be able and willing to give written informed consent for a contrast enhanced ultrasound study of the prostate including the additional study biopsies * Subject must be a male at least 18 years of age when informed consent is obtained Exclusion Criteria: * Participant in a clinical trial involving an investigational drug within the past 30 days * Patients with known or suspected hypersensitivity to perflutren, polyethylene glycol (PEG), or any other component of Definity * Previous treatment for prostate cancer, including hormone therapy * Clinically unstable, severely ill, or moribund as per treating physician
