What to expect
No one can promise a trial will help you personally — that is what the research is trying to find out.
What participation involves
Not stated in the study description — ask the study team about visits and procedures.
- Compensation
- Not stated
- Study-related exams and procedures are typically provided at no cost. This is how many trials work in general — confirm the details for this study with the study team.
- Participants are monitored closely by the research team throughout the study.
- Some participants may receive access to an investigational treatment, which is still being studied.
- Your participation helps researchers learn whether this approach could help future patients.
About this study
In plain language
This study tests whether tight blood pressure control after birth can improve heart and blood vessel health and lower the risk of lasting high blood pressure. It is for adults in the first 4 days after birth who had a high blood pressure disorder linked to pregnancy.
The long-term goal of our work is to evaluate the effect of intensive postpartum blood pressure control on maternal cardiovascular health, risk of chronic hypertension, and reversal of vascular dysfunction generated by hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, thus attenuating the lifelong trajectory of cardiovascular disease risk.
Compensation is read from the study's own description and may be missing — always confirm with the study team.

- Be within 0–4 days after giving birth.
- Be age 18 or older.
- Be able to communicate in English or Spanish.
- Have an established pregnancy care doctor at an MCW or NU health system practice with access to Epic electronic health records.

- Have type 1 or type 2 diabetes.
- Are in an intensive care unit when checked for the study, or are going home from the hospital that day.
- Were diagnosed with a pregnancy-related high blood pressure disorder during a return hospital stay after going home from giving birth.
- Have a known allergy or another medical reason not to take nifedipine ER, a long-acting blood pressure medicine.
- Cannot or do not want to give informed consent, meaning agreement to join after learning about the study.
- Already take a long-acting blood pressure medicine as part of usual care.
- Have sickle cell disease, a blood disorder, or systemic lupus erythematosus (lupus), a disease in which the body's defenses attack healthy tissue.
