What to expect
No one can promise a trial will help you personally — that is what the research is trying to find out.
What participation involves
Not stated in the study description — ask the study team about visits and procedures.
- Compensation
- Not stated
- Study-related exams and procedures are typically provided at no cost. This is how many trials work in general — confirm the details for this study with the study team.
- Participants are monitored closely by the research team throughout the study.
- Some participants may receive access to an investigational treatment, which is still being studied.
- Your participation helps researchers learn whether this approach could help future patients.
About this study
In plain language
This study uses fNIRS, a tool that uses light to measure brain activity, to look for signs of pain during burn bandage changes. It also measures pain relief from virtual reality (VR). The study is for children ages 6–17 being treated in the NCH burn unit.
This study aims to use functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to identify and quantify pain biomarkers during burn dressing changes and pain relief induced by virtual reality (VR).
Compensation is read from the study's own description and may be missing — always confirm with the study team.
Eligibility
Who can join
- Being treated for a recent burn injury.
- Age 6–17 years.
- Admitted to the NCH burn unit for treatment.
- Have a bandage that needs daily changes over 3 days.
- The child and family caregivers can communicate, read, and write in English.
Who can't join
- Have wounds that could get in the way of study tasks.
- Have trouble seeing, hearing, thinking, or moving that prevents completing study tests correctly.
- Have a history of motion sickness, seizures, dizziness, or migraines triggered by visual auras, such as flashing lights or other changes in vision.
- Are in foster care, are a prisoner, or are currently pregnant.
- Child abuse is suspected.
- Cannot communicate in English.
