What to expect

No one can promise a trial will help you personally — that is what the research is trying to find out.

What participation involves

Not stated in the study description — ask the study team about visits and procedures.

Compensation
Not stated
  • Study-related exams and procedures are typically provided at no cost. This is how many trials work in general — confirm the details for this study with the study team.
  • Participants are monitored closely by the research team throughout the study.
  • Some participants may receive access to an investigational treatment, which is still being studied.
  • Your participation helps researchers learn whether this approach could help future patients.

About this study

In plain language

This study tests TMS, a treatment that uses magnetic pulses, during sleep for depression. It looks at whether people can tolerate it, whether it is practical, and whether it may help the brain change and adapt during treatment. Adults ages 18–65 with depression and healthy adults may join.

The goal of this study is to establish the feasibility, tolerability, and preliminary efficacy of sleep-state transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) for enhancing plasticity in depression treatment.

Compensation is read from the study's own description and may be missing — always confirm with the study team.

Eligibility

Who can join

  • For the depression group, have a current diagnosis of major depression.
  • Have moderate to severe depression.
  • Have tried at least 1 antidepressant medicine that did not work.
  • Have taken the same dose of antidepressant medicine for at least 6 weeks before joining.
  • Healthy volunteers must have no current major depression symptoms and take no antidepressant or antipsychotic medicines.
  • Healthy volunteers must have no major mental health, brain, nerve, substance use, or medical conditions that affect brain function.
  • Healthy volunteers must have no condition that makes TMS or MRI scans unsafe.

Who can't join

  • An intellectual disability that affects learning and daily skills.
  • A serious head injury or a brain or nerve disorder.
  • Being pregnant or in the period after giving birth.
  • A condition that makes TMS or MRI scans unsafe.
  • Current substance use or thoughts of suicide.

Simplified for readability. The official criteria below are what the study team uses.
