What to expect

No one can promise a trial will help you personally — that is what the research is trying to find out.

What participation involves

Not stated in the study description — ask the study team about visits and procedures.

Compensation
Not stated
  • Study-related exams and procedures are typically provided at no cost. This is how many trials work in general — confirm the details for this study with the study team.
  • Participants are monitored closely by the research team throughout the study.
  • Some participants may receive access to an investigational treatment, which is still being studied.
  • Your participation helps researchers learn whether this approach could help future patients.

About this study

In plain language

This study tests whether counseling called behavioral activation, given remotely by trained counselors, can prevent depression after a stroke. It is for older adults with low incomes who have had a stroke and have no or mild signs of depression.

The overall objective of the project is to determine the effectiveness of tele-delivered behavioral activation (BA) by trained lay counselors (Tele-BA-S) to prevent Post-stroke depression (PSD) in low-income, older stroke survivors with subthreshold depression (SD).

Compensation is read from the study's own description and may be missing — always confirm with the study team.

Eligibility

  • Live in a home in the community.
  • Be able to speak and read English or Spanish.
  • Score 11 or higher on the Mini-MoCA, a test of memory and thinking.

Who can't join

  • Had a stroke not linked to blood vessel risk factors, such as one caused by drug use, or had a TIA (a temporary, stroke-like attack).
  • Score 15 or higher on the HDRS depression test, 10 or higher on the PHQ-9 depression test, or answer yes to PHQ-9 question 9 about death or self-harm.

  • Have a high risk of suicide, a severe mental illness such as bipolar disorder or active psychosis (loss of touch with reality), or currently take antipsychotic medicines.
  • Have diagnosed dementia, or take cognitive enhancers (memory and thinking medicines), amyloid-targeting medicines, or orexin receptor blockers (a type of sleep medicine).
  • Have diagnosed aphasia (trouble using or understanding language) or severe problems with memory and thinking.
  • Have high-risk alcohol or drug misuse.
  • Take medicine for a mood disorder and have changed the dose or type in the past 4 weeks.

Simplified for readability. The official criteria below are what the study team uses.
